The Lone Star Conference announced the 2010 men's soccer academic awards on Wednesday, headlined by Eastern New Mexico senior midfielder Edgar Bear, who was named Academic Player of the Year.
Bear, a finance major from Houston, Texas, has a 3.93 cumulative grade point average. This season he scored three goals, all in wins over Adams State, Wayland Baptist and West Texas A&M, and had five assists. Bear’s contributions helped the Greyhounds reach the NSCAA National Poll for the first time in team history, with ENMU being ranked 17th and 23rd earlier in the season.
Bear led the 12-player All-Academic team, which recognizes both athletic and academic achievement.
The All-Academic Team is selected by the league's sports information directors, who vote on the basis of both academic and athletic achievement. To be eligible for LSC academic honors, student-athletes must have played in at least 50 percent of team’s contests, reached sophomore athletic and academic standing (true freshmen and redshirt freshmen are not eligible), completed at least one full academic year at the nominating institution, and have a minimum 3.30 cumulative grade point average based on the 4.0 system for his/her entire collegiate career.
This year, the team consisted of four seniors, five juniors and two sophomores plus one in graduate school.
Joining Bear on the team was ENMU teammate Michael Stewart, Incarnate Word’s Michael Langford, Craig Bartlett, Justin Odette and Dustin Lemley, West Texas A&M’s Nicki Nielsen, Kaleb Dale and John Cox, Northeastern State’s Bo Evans and Midwestern State’s Casey Hibbs and Tex McCullough.
