LSC announces annual Women's Hoops awards

Northeastern State's Jasmine Webb earned Player of the Year honors in the North Division and West Texas A&M's Joni Unruh claimed the same award in the South Division to headline the Lone Star Conference women's basketball postseason awards announced Tuesday by league officials.

The awards announcement came Tuesday night at a pre-championship banquet in Bartlesville, Okla., where the LSC Basketball Championship tournament is set to begin on Thursday.  Quarterfinal games will be played all day Thursday, with semifinal games slated for Saturday afternoon and the championship game on Sunday at 1 p.m.

Webb and Unruh received top honors by collecting the most votes in the balloting of league coaches.

Webb led the RiverHawks to the North Division title with a 13-1 conference record.  The junior averaged 12.1 points and 6.6 rebounds a game to lead NSU.  She was a second-team All-LSC North selection in 2009.

With Webb on the All-LSC North Division first team were Central Oklahoma's Ashley Beckley and Cristina Yarbrough, Southeastern Oklahoma's Destiny Brown and Texas Woman's Jessica Hanna.

Unruh averaged 13.6 points and 5.7 rebounds per contest to help the Lady Buffs claim their fifth-straight South Division crown with a 10-2 record.  The junior was an All-LSC honorable mention pick last season.

Joining Unruh on the All-LSC South Division first team was Abilene Christian's Jamie Meyer and Jody Meyer, Angelo State's Camille Perkins and Tarleton State's Joanne Jones.

Additional hardware was handed out for defensive player, newcomer, freshman and coach of the year.

In the North Division, UCO's Cristina Yarbrough claimed Defensive Player of the Year acclaim for the second straight year, East Central's Jourdan Clark was the Freshman of the Year and Cameron's Josie Stewart picked up Newcomer of the Year honors. NSU's Randy Gipson was named Coach of the Year.

In the South, Tarleton's Shelby Adamson earned Defensive Player of the Year honors, while ASU's Leah LeMaire was tabbed for Freshman of the Year.  WTAMU's Jamie Simmons was Newcomer of the Year, while the Lady Buffs Krista Gerlich earned Coach of the Year recognition.

Overall, more than 40 student-athletes were honored by the all-conference program, including at least one member from each of the 15 LSC women's basketball teams.  The awards are voted upon by the league coaches.
