Softball: LSC announces academic awards

Midwestern State catcher Lauren Craig and Angelo State second baseman Alix Dean headlined the Lone Star Conference North and South Division All-Academic teams, respectively; as the league’s annual softball academic awards were announced Thursday at the championship banquet.

Craig claimed North Division Academic Player of the Year honors, while Dean was tabbed South Division Academic Player of the Year for the second consecutive year.

Craig was joined by nine additional standouts on the LSC North Division All-Academic Team, while nine others joined Dean on the South Division All-Academic Team.  Additionally, 38 more softball players were named to the LSC Commissioner’s Honor Roll.

To be eligible for LSC academic honors, student-athletes must carry at least a 3.30 grade point average and have reached sophomore status both athletically and academically. The Academic Player of Year award and All-Academic Team are selected from the list of academically qualified players, with the league’s sports information directors voting on the basis of both academic and athletic achievement. All qualifying student-athletes not selected for the All-Academic Team are then named to the Commissioner’s Honor Roll.

In all, 58 softball players were distinguished through the league’s academic awards program, including at least one from all 14 softball-playing member institutions.

Joining Craig on the North Division All-Academic Team was Mustang teammate Nicki Duff, East Central’s Nicole Sanchez and Emily Kennemer, Northeastern State’s Lacee Craig, Cameron’s Carrie Harvey and Ashton McBride, Central Oklahoma’s Molly Shivers and Megan Bentley and Southwestern Oklahoma’s Stacey Creger.

On the South All-Academic Team along with Dean were Texas Woman’s Billie Callahan, Eastern New Mexico’s Alex Mayo Otis and Michelle Anderson, Tarleton State’s Julie Norris, West Texas A&M’s Amber Farr, Kaitlyn Witte and Kristina Myles.
