All-LSC Football Awards announced

Midwestern State had nine first-team picks and five individual award winners recognized Thursday when the annual Lone Star Conference football awards were announced by LSC officials.

The Mustangs, who claimed the LSC title with a perfect 8-0 mark, had six players on the top offense and three more on the first-team defense after recording the school’s first undefeated regular season at 10-0. MSU added several individual honors with Offensive Player of the Year Brandon Kelsey, two-time Offensive Lineman of the Year Amini Silatolu, Receiver of the Year David Little, Freshman of the Year Jimmy Pipken and Coach of the Year Bill Maskill.

Abilene Christian had nine first-teamers with five on offense and four on defense plus a pair of repeat winners in Mitchell Gale, the Offensive Back of the Year, and Aston Whiteside, the Defensive Lineman of the Year. Whiteside also claimed Defensive Player of the Year acclaim.

MSU and ACU were both selected for the NCAA Division II playoffs. The Mustangs are the top seed in Super Region Four, while the Wildcats are the No. 6 seed. MSU received a first-round bye and will host the Northwest Missouri-Missouri Western winner in the second round on Nov. 26. The Wildcats play at Washburn on Nov. 19 at 1 p.m. in first-round action.

West Texas A&M, who will represent the league in the Kanza Bowl on Nov. 27, had eight players on the first team with three offensive and five defensive selections.

Texas A&M-Kingsville had six first-teamers including Linebacker of the Year Jeremy Aguilar.

Tarleton State’s Deshaun Phillips earned Defensive Back of the Year acclaim as the Texans only first team player.

Angelo State, Eastern New Mexico and Texas A&M-Commerce each had one first-teamer, while Incarnate Word had three second-team picks.

Overall, 120 student-athletes were recognized by the LSC's postseason awards program, with 36 players named to the first team, 33 on the second team and another 51 gaining honorable mention. The all-conference honors were selected by the head coaches of the nine league teams.
