Women’s Soccer Championship: Commerce advances on penalty kicks

Texas A&M-Commerce advanced to the semifinals with a 4-3 advantage in penalty kicks after a 1-1 score in 110 minutes against Angelo State at the Lone Star Conference women’s soccer championship.

The tie marked the fourth even game for both the Lions and Rambelles in LSC tournament action. Commerce won its second shootout after penalty kick outcomes in the 2005, 2007 and 2009 championships.

The shootout was all square through three rounds as both teams made the first and third attempts, with saves on the second shots. ASU missed in the fourth frame, opening the door for Commerce. Devon Herrman converted the fifth chance for the Lions to end the game.

Angelo State took a 1-0 lead into halftime with a header by Brandie DeBacker in the 38th minute, assisted by Katie Squires.

Commerce tied the game just into the second half (47:16) on a header by Cadie Annett, which was put in off a Brionna Minde cross in front of the box.

At halfime, ASU had a 7-4 shot advantage with three corner kicks and three saves. The Rambelles outshot the Lions 16-11 for the game, with five corner kicks for each team.

Randi Hafele picked up the win in goal for Commerce with four saves. ASU’s Morgan Harrison took the loss after a six-save effort.

The Lions will play top seed and host Abilene Christian in Friday’s semifinal game at 2:30 p.m.
