Women’s Soccer Championship: Sudden victory sends MSU to title game

Midwestern State scored twice in the last 11 minutes of play including a sudden-victory goal in overtime to top upset-minded West Texas A&M 2-1 in the Lone Star Conference Women’s Soccer Championship semifinals.

The Mustangs advance to the league championship game for second straight year and seventh time in school history. MSU will play the winner of Friday’s semifinal between Abilene Christian and Texas A&M-Commerce. Kickoff is set for Sunday at 1 p.m.

WTAMU took an early lead with a direct corner kick goal in the 12th minute by Becky McMullen. The Lady Buffs defense made it stand until the 84th minute, despite facing 21 Mustang shots.

MSU tied the game with an unassisted goal by Payton Fookes into an open net at the 84:43 mark which sent the game to overtime.

The Mustangs ended the game with a Kelsey Hill goal, headed in off a corner kick assist from Maddie Fraser just five minutes into the first overtime period.

The sixth-seeded Lady Buffs (9-10-1) are now 17-9-3 in the LSC championship, while the No. 2 Mustangs (12-5-2) improve to 14-12 in tournament action.
