Men’s Soccer: LSC announces academic honors

The Lone Star Conference announced the 2011 men's soccer academic awards on Wednesday, headlined by Incarnate Word goalkeeper Chris Fidler, who was named Academic Player of the Year.

Fidler, who is pursuing his master’s degree in sports administrations, has been a mainstay at goal for the Cardinals who were selected for the NCAA Division II Championship field. He has nine shutouts in 17 games along with a .807 save percentage and 0.63 goals against average.

Fidler topped the 11-player All-Academic team, which recognizes both athletic and academic achievement, which included five seniors, three juniors, two sophomores and one in graduate school.

The All-Academic Team is selected by the league's sports information directors, who vote on the basis of both academic and athletic achievement. To be eligible for LSC academic honors, student-athletes must have played in at least 50 percent of team’s contests, reached sophomore athletic and academic standing (true freshmen and redshirt freshmen are not eligible), completed at least one full academic year at the nominating institution, and have a minimum 3.30 cumulative grade point average based on the 4.0 system for his/her entire collegiate career.

Along with Fidler on the team was UIW teammate Michael Langford, West Texas A&M’s John Cox, Manuel Montes, Abel Olivas and Lukas Garcia, Eastern New Mexico’s Andy Wilkinson, Michael Stewart and Luiz Buosi, and Midwestern State’s Kelly Gill and Chris Dwyer.
