The Lone Star Conference recognized 12 student-athletes for their academic achievements Wednesday evening when league officials announced the volleyball academic awards at the LSC Championship banquet.
Abilene Christian led the selections to the All-Academic team, placing five on the 12-player squad, followed by Incarnate Word with two honorees. The All-Academic team commemorates both academic and athletic achievement.
The Wildcats Jennie Hutt, a psychology major, was selected as LSC Academic Player of the Year. She was a CoSIDA third-team Academic All-District and Academic All-Lone Star Conference honoree in 2010. Hutt leads ACU in kills (474, 3.85 per set) and points (523.5, 4.26) and currently ranks fifth all-time in school history with 1,499 kills.
The All-Academic team is chosen by the league’s sports information directors, who select players on the basis of both athletic and academic achievement. To be eligible for LSC academic honors, student-athletes must have played in at least 50 percent of team’s contests, reached sophomore athletic and academic standing (true freshmen and redshirt freshmen are not eligible), completed at least one full academic year at the nominating institution, and have a minimum 3.30 cumulative grade point average based on the 4.0 system for his/her entire collegiate career.
Hutt is joined on the All-Academic team by fellow teammates Kalynne Allen, Neely Borger, Kelsie Edwards and Caley Johnson along with Tarleton State’s Tiana Bond, West Texas A&M’s Erin Dougherty, Incarnate Word’s Sarah Cardenas and Danielle Suarez, Texas A&M-Kingsville’s Ali Insell, Midwestern State’s Hillary White and Texas A&M-Commerce’s Rachel Robertson.
