Baseball: Postseason awards announced

Nearly 60 baseball stars were honored Friday night as the league’s annual baseball postseason awards were announced at the championship banquet held prior to the start of the Lone Star Conference baseball championship in Abilene, Texas.

Those recognized included three first-team choices for LSC regular season champion Incarnate Word, who won the title in their first season with a 24-9 league mark.

The Cardinals claimed three individual awards with Pitcher of the Year Kirk Jewasko, Freshman of the Year Derrick Walls and Coach of the Year Danny Heep. Cameron’s Chase Larsson was named Player of the Year.

UIW had five total picks with the three first-team and two second-teamers. Southeastern Oklahoma and Cameron each had six selections with five on the first team for the Savage Storm and four for the Aggies. Three teams – Tarleton State, West Texas A&M and Central Oklahoma – all had four representatives.

A total of 59 student-athletes were recognized by the all-conference program, including at least one player from each of the 13 baseball teams in the LSC.  The awards are voted upon by the league coaches.
