ASU guard Haylee Oliver scored 14 points, but it was her blocked shot on a potential game-tying 3-point shot with seven seconds remaining, followed by a clinching free throw that helped seal a 61-57 win for Angelo State, who rallied from 10 points down against Cameron to advance to the semifinals of the LSC Championships.
The Rambelles, who improve to 13-14 and are the fifth seed in the tournament, advance to Saturday’s semifinal game against the winner of Tarleton State/Eastern New Mexico.
Trailing 31-21 at the half, ASU shot 51.9 percent in the second half. More importantly, the Rambelles clamped down on Cameron, holding the Aggies to just 8-of-28 shooting from the floor in the second half.
Three players hit double figures for the Rambelles, including Oliver’s 14, along with Paige Weishuhn, who scored 14 with five rebounds. Cassi Stegall had 12 points and six boards.
While LSC Player of the Year Sabelle Diata was held to just 12 points, she did have nine rebounds. But Cameron’s Julie Paunovic led the way with 27 points and eight boards.
The game had nine ties and seven lead changes, and both teams had shots to pull away, but were hampered by free throws. Cameron shot just 13-of-23 from the line while ASU made only 10-of-20.
With the game tied at 56 with 1:42 left, Oliver hit a short jumper to take the lead. Oliver and Stegall each added free throws down the stretch to preserve the win.
For the Rambelles, who are not ranked in the South Central Regional, they must win the LSC Championship here in Allen to extend their season.

Angelo State Quotes
Angelo State Coach Sally Brooks:
"It's been an interesting year and last week was the year in a nutshell. We beat the best team in the conference (Tarleton State) and lost to the worst team in the league (Texas A&M-Commerce). But our team has a chemistry that we really like each other and pull together. I haven't had a team with this chemistry and they wanted to win."
"We just kept plugging away and knew it would happen. Allen has been great and these kids don't want to go home and now we'll get to stay around a couple more days. I'm really proud of them."
On the Inside Play
Angelo State Coach Sally Brooks:
"While Paige (Weishuhn) is the best low post player I've coached, Cara (Gorton) played great defense on Sabelle Diata. We wanted to force her more out to the wing and made it happen."
On the ASU offense
Angelo State Coach Sally Brooks:
"We tweaked our offense a little bit, and relied more on our guards. They played well and penetrated and were not scared. That really paid off. Paige (Weishuhn) scored well inside. We have great post players, but Paige doesn't care how many she scores, just as long as we are ahead at the end."
Senior Paige Weishuhn:
"I've always tried to be aggressive. And it paid off tonight."
On the block at the end of the game
Freshman Haylee Oliver:
"There was only 10 seconds left in the game and I assumed that (Alexis Williams) would shoot it and I was there to get it."
"I really try to play and not show emotion on the court, but after the block I saw that we would win I couldn't hold it in."
On ASU winning it's first LSC Tournament game since 2008
Senior Paige Weishuhn:
"It means so much to win our first game in the tournament. We haven't done it since I've been here. I believed in my teammates and coaches and we made it happen."
Cameron Quotes
Tom Webb
Opening Statement
"It was tough. We played very well in the first and were up 12 in the second half. We didn't play very well and I didn't call the right plays. In a tournament, anyone can make a run. We just wanted to get the ball in the right place. We didn't do a great job of doing that."
On the Aggies' struggles from the free throw line
"We had to battle around that. We haven't been great all year from the line. Some of that is the ball bouncing the wrong way and some of it was the minutes we were playing. If we make a few plays down the stretch, those free throws don't matter."
On his senior class -- Nicole Pendarvis, Sabelle Diata and Julie Paunovic
"This group has been really good. We've had eight games this year that we feel we could have won. I am going to miss those three great seniors. I have a 2-year-old and I want him to be around great kids and I never have to worry about that with this group. I don't even want to think about recruiting right now."
Sabelle Diata
Reflections on the season
"I think we had a great season and I'm proud of my teammates. We really love to play with this team. We have great teammates and great coaches. They help us to grow and move on. I think it will be a good thing (for the returners) to learn from."
Julie Paunovic
On her 27-point, 8-rebound performance
"I just tried to get down to the post. There were a few mismatch issues and I thought we could do some work in the post. We didn't do well late in the second half and that was crucial."
