The Lone Star Conference recognized 14 student-athletes for their scholastic achievements Wednesday evening when league officials announced the volleyball academic awards at the LSC Championship banquet.
WT’s Laura Iwuchukwu, an elementary education major, was tabbed LSC Academic Player of the Year. She was a repeat selection to the all-academic team, and has tallied 257 kills (2.42 per set) on the season to hit an impressive .331 while also leading all of NCAA Division II in blocks with 180 (23 solo, 157 assisted) to average an incredible 1.70 per set to lead the nation.
Angelo State led the selections with four All-Academic honorees, while LSC Champion West Texas A&M had three. Texas Woman’s, Texas A&M-Commerce, and Tarleton State each had two honorees.
The All-Academic team is chosen by the league’s sports information directors, who select players based on both athletic and academic achievement. To be eligible for LSC academic honors, student-athletes must have played in at least 50 percent of team’s contests, reached sophomore athletic and academic standing (true freshmen and redshirt freshmen are not eligible), completed at least one full academic year at the nominating institution, and have a minimum 3.30 cumulative grade point average based on the 4.0 system for his/her entire collegiate career.
Iwuchukwu is joined on the All-Academic team by Lady Buff teammates Halie Harton and Lexi Davis, A&M-C’s Kayla Bond and Ciara Holmes, ASU’s Maddie Huth, Katie MacLeay, Shelby Wilt, and Arielle Bond, TSU’s Stacie Murrah and Danielle Barker, TWU’s Kayla Rivero and Chloe' Tate, and Midwestern State’s Caitlin Wallace.
In addition to Iwuchukwu, Bond and Huth were repeat selections.
