West Texas A&M quarterback Dustin Vaughan led the 2013 Lone Star Conference football academic awards, which were announced by league officials on Thursday.
Vaughan, a senior biology/pre-medicine major from Corpus Christi, Texas, was selected as Academic Player of the Year for the second straight year. He has started all 11 games for the playoff bound Buffaloes and ranks in the top three nationally in seven categories including leading the nation in passing yards (4,268) and passing yards per game (388). Vaughan was named one of just 16 (all divisions of college football) National Football Foundation National Scholar-Athletes ($18,000 postgraduate scholarship) and is a finalist for the William V. Campbell Trophy.
A total of 11 players were named to the LSC All-Academic Team, which recognizes both academic and athletic achievement.
The All-Academic Team is selected by the league's sports information directors, who vote on the basis of both academic and athletic achievement. To be eligible for LSC academic honors, student-athletes must have played in at least 50 percent of team’s contests, reached sophomore athletic and academic standing (true freshmen and redshirt freshmen are not eligible), completed at least one full academic year at the nominating institution, and have a minimum 3.30 cumulative grade point average based on the 4.0 system for his/her entire collegiate career.
With Vaughan on the All-Academic Team were teammates Nathan Slaughter, John McSheffery and Chris Olson, Eastern New Mexico’s Jeremy Buurma, Angelo State’s Rush Seaver, Tarleton State’s Charles Moore and Zach Henshaw, Texas A&M-Commerce’s Stephen Ford and Marcus Fore, and Texas A&M-Kingsville’s Trevor Pesek.
Vaughan is a three-time all-academic honoree, while Slaughter and Moore are repeat selections.
