Lady Buffs Streak Past ASU To Semifinals

No team finished the regular season as hot as West Texas A&M so it was no surprise the Lady Buffs continued their winnings ways in Thursday’s quarterfinal round of the LSC Championships.

As the No. 3 seed, WTAMU turned up the defensive pressure and cruised to a 61-36 win over sixth-seeded Angelo State in the first of four games Thursday at the Allen Event Center. The 36 points allowed by the Lady Buffs is the fewest in LSC Championship history.

The win upped WT’s winning streak to seven games and 12 of the last 14. The Lady Buffs improve to 19-11 and advance to Friday’s semifinal game against No. 7 seed Texas A&M-Commerce.

The season ends for the Rambelles, who finish with a 14-13 record.

This game was the rubber match of the season as ASU defeated WT in double overtime, 77-71 back in early December. The Lady Buffs then nipped the Rambelles 54-48 in Canyon on Feb. 2.

But this one was all WT from start to finish as the Lady Buffs jumped out to a 17-3 lead and never looked back. It was 32-14 at the half as the Lady Buffs picked up the defensive pressure. ASU shot just 19.2 percent from the field in the first half and finished the game at 27.5 percent.

Leading the way for the Buffs was Chontiquah White, who had 20 points and 11 rebounds. Casey Land scored 13 points while Devin Griffin added 12 points, seven rebounds and five steals. Brittany Williams and Jordan Vessels had identical stat lines of five points and six rebounds each.

For the Rambelles, no players finished in double figures in scoring. Haylee Oliver led the way with nine and five rebounds. ASU shot just 3 of 14 from 3-point land.

Before Thursday’s 36-point outing by ASU, the previous tournament-low was also against West Texas A&M, which held East Texas State to 38 points in a 1991 game.
