LSC Tennis: UIW's Assuncao and Karaklis pick up weekly honors

MEN’S
Jair Assuncao, University of the Incarnate Word, JR, Londrina, Brazil, Carmina Grabner

Assuncao led the Cardinals to a 5-4 win at #19 Midwestern State. He teamed with Mario Jakovljevic to take a 9-7 win at #1 doubles. He came back with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Colby Meeks at #2 singles to cap off his day. 

WOMEN’S
Nicole Karaklis, University of the Incarnate Word, FR, San Antonio, TX, Laurel Springs

Karaklis improved to 7-2 on the season in singles play last week. She defeated Midwestern State's Fatima Clementino at #4 singles 6-4, 6-2 in a 6-3 loss on the road. She also won her #3 singles match at St. Edward's against Florence Boinon 6-4, 6-1 in a 7-2 victory over the #22 team in the country. She lost her #2 doubles match at MSU, but teamed with Malisa Vatanadilok to win at #2 doubles at St. Ed's 9-8. 
 
OTHER TOP PERFORMERS
Nicolai Ferrigno, Cameron University, SO, Hvidovre, Denmark
After three matches this weekend, the #19 Ferrigno is undefeated individually, with a perfect 8-0 record. On Friday, Mar. 1 He defeated his counterpart from CSU-Pueblo (6-0, 6-0) and then later that day beat East Central's number one (6-0,6-1). On Saturday, Mar. 2 Ferrigno won in three sets against Southwest Baptist's number one (6-3, 1-6, 6-3). Additionally, he and his partner went 3-0 in doubles this weekend. 

Melanie Barnes, Tarleton State University, JR, Duncan, Okla., Duncan HS
After an injury to the Tarleton lineup, Melanie Barnes stepped into the No. 2 seeded game for the
TexAnns Saturday and helped lift Tarleton to a 9-0 sweep of Texas A&M-Kingsville in its LSC opener. Barnes, in her first No. 2 action of singles play this season, won her match against Marija Dimitrovska 6-2, 6-1. Barnes also handled her doubles match, along with partner Ivana Zecevic, by an 8-1 blowout score in the No. 2 seeded doubles game.

University of the Incarnate Word
The Cardinals were on the road last week. The women's team lost, 6-3 at #40 Midwestern State and bounced back with a 7-2 win at #22 St. Edward's. Freshman Nicole Karaklis was the team's top singles player winning both of her matches. The duo of Taryn Strahl and Jennifer Betancourt swept both of their doubles matches. On the men's side, the Cardinals picked up a 5-4 win at #19 Midwestern State. Jair Assuncao and Mario Jakovljevic teamed together at #1 doubles for a win and then each won their singles match at #2 and #3, respectively. The women host Barry University on Friday and then both teams host Abilene Christian on Sunday. 

Tarleton State University
Tarleton swept its LSC opening match at Texas A&M-Kingsville Saturday without its nationally-ranked player. Karla Martinez stepped into the No. 1 singles spot and Melanie Barnes into the No. 2 to lead Tarleton to a 9-0 sweep.
