Golf academic awards announced

Incarnate Word’s Austin Jordan and Cameron’s Trey Lawson shared Academic Player of the Year acclaim on the men’s side, while Texas A&M-Commerce’s Sara Diaz captured the women’s top award as the Lone Star Conference golf academic awards were announced by league officials Sunday night at the championship awards banquet.

Jordan and Lawson, were joined by Abilene Christian’s Ian Evans, Midwestern State’s Antonio Herran and A&M-C’s Marcus Sanna.

A business administration major from Rainbow, Texas, Jordan has won a pair of tournaments with a 74.0 scoring average.  The sophomore has six top-20 finishes, including each of his last four events.

Lawson, a sports fitness management major from Holiday, Texas, has three top-five finishes and five top-10’s in eight events this season.  The senior shot a season low 70 three times for a 73.48 average score.

With Diaz on the women’s team were Tarleton State’s Sharon Lau, Angelo State’s Abby Bobo and Courtney Rutledge, MSU’s Kendra Whittley, and West Texas A&M’s Vanessa Spradlin.

Diaz, Lau and Whittley were repeat selections on the All-Academic Team.

A business major from San Antonio, Texas, Diaz has competed in 10 events with a 78.55 scoring average.  The junior has posted five straight top-15 finishes including a top-10 performance.

To be eligible for LSC academic honors, student-athletes must carry at least a 3.30 grade point average and be at least a sophomore, both academically and athletically. The Academic Player of Year award and All-Academic Team are selected from the list of academically qualified players, with the league’s sports information directors voting on the basis of both academic and athletic achievement.
