Men’s Golf: MSU leads after 36 holes

Midwestern State’s Santiago Gomez posted four birdies in the last six holes to claim the individual lead and provide the Mustangs a 16-stroke advantage after the first two rounds at the Lone Star Conference Men’s Golf Championships. The annual league event, which features six men's teams, is being held at The Golf Club at Champions Circle in Fort Worth, Texas.

      The field played in warm and windy weather with temperatures in the 80’s Monday at the par-72, 6,988 -yard course. 

      Gomez’s individual effort boosted MSU to the top of the team leader board at 13-over 589 (297-292).  The redshirt freshman ended the day as the only player under-par at three-under 141 (73-68) including the low round (68) of the day.  Derek Oland (four-over 148) and Antonio Herran (five-over 149) joined Gomez with top-five finishes.

      Abilene Christian (605) sits in second place at 29-over after rounds of 303 and 302.  The Wildcats were led by Alex Carpenter’s 146, and Corbin Renner’s 149 to move into second place heading into the final 18 holes of the 54-hole event.

      Cameron is third (610), followed by Incarnate Word (613), Texas A&M-Commerce (617) and West Texas A&M (622).

      Fans can see all the first- and second-round results and also follow the action live as three-hole scoring updates will be provided throughout Tuesday final round which starts at 10:08 a.m. at championship central.
