LSC Football: A&M-C, ASU to play for playoffs title

LSC FOOTBALL PLAYOFFS
Texas A&M-Commerce and Angelo State will meet in the Lone Star Conference football playoffs championship game on November 15 in Commerce, Texas.  The Lions edged the Rams, 41-40, earlier this season.
    The third-place game matches Tarleton State at Midwestern State.  The Mustangs won the previous meeting 27-23.  West Texas A&M and Eastern New Mexico play for fifth-place, while Texas A&M-Kingsville at McMurry is the seventh-place contest.  The Greyhounds topped the Buffs 31-21, and the War Hawks defeated the Javelinas 27-21 during the regular season.

LSC FOOTBALL
Lone Star Conference teams played the first week of the inaugural conference playoffs last week.  Here is a closer look at the contests:
A&M-Commerce topped Tarleton State 56-49 to win its second straight game.
Angelo State defeated Midwestern State 41-36 for its fourth consecutive win.  All six scoring drives for ASU were four play or less.
Eastern New Mexico charged to a 34-0 halftime lead and never looked back, en-route to a 61-7 win over Texas A&M-Kingsville.
West Texas A&M posted a 58-13 victory over McMurry.
    LSC football teams are 40-36 overall this season.  The squads are 5-1 combined versus the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, Great Lakes Valley Conference and Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference teams, which are also in NCAA Super Regional Four.

PLAYERS OF THE WEEK
CO-OFFENSIVE
Kyle Washington, Angelo State University, JR, QB, Humble, Texas, Humble HS
Washington had a hand in all six of the Rams touchdowns in the 41-36 win over Midwestern State to propel ASU to the LSC Playoff Championship game. The junior threw for 268 yards and four touchdowns on 14-of-28 passing while gaining 184 yards on the ground and two touchdowns. He averaged 15.3 yards per carry in the win. Washington is now No. 4 in NCAA Division II and No. 1 in the LSC in total offense averaging 353.6 yards per game.

E’lon Spight, Eastern New Mexico University, SR, RB, St. Louis, Mo., Hazelwood East HS/Grossmont College
Spight registered Eastern New Mexico’s first 200-yard rushing day since early in the 2007 season and finished with 217 yards on just 16 carries. His performance lifted the Greyhounds to their third consecutive victory over Texas A&M-Kingsville. Spight carried the ball 13 times for 103 yards and four touchdowns in the first half and saw limited action in the second half, due to the Greyhounds’ lead. The four touchdowns clinched his single-season team record with 19. Spight had 114 yards on just three carries in the second half, to bring his season total to 1,479, also an ENMU record. For the game, he had positive yardage on all 16 carries, with eight first downs and four runs of at least 23 yards

DEFENSIVE
Iosia Iosia, West Texas A&M University, JR, DE, San Francisco, Calif., Aiagon HS
Iosia was all over the field as he had eight tackles, including two huge sacks for a loss of 24 yards and 4.5 tackles for loss for a team-high 33 yards.  He had one quarterback hurry as the Buffs held McMurry to just 186 yards of total offense which was a season-low against the Buffs.

SPECIAL TEAMS
Ransom Cook, Texas A&M University - Commerce, SR, Coverage, Gulfport, Fla, Boca Ciega HS
With the game knotted at 28 and Tarleton State attempting a field goal, the Lions special teams unit batted the ball down and Cook jumped on it. He scoop the ball and ran 80 yards for the touchdown to give the Lions a 35-28 lead. His scamper was part of a 27-point swing for the Lions to start the third quarter.
