WTAMU, MSU claim LSC Cross Country titles

West Texas A&M repeated as men’s champions and Midwestern State won the women’s title by virtue of tiebreaker at the Lone Star Conference Cross Country Championships held Saturday in Wichita Falls, Texas.

      The Buffs captured the men’s championship for the second time, while the Mustangs won their fifth crown on the women’s side.

      WT topped the field in the men’s eight-kilometer race with a team score of 28 points including seven top-15 runners.  Brett Villarreal led the Buffs with a second-place finish in 25:24.20.  Geoffrey Kipchumba (25:32.10) and Steve Lagat (25:40.30) added top-five performances.

     Cameron's Thomas Toth was the individual medalist in 24:52.5.

      Eastern New Mexico finished second with 81 points, while Tarleton State was third (90), and A&M-Commerce fourth (91).

      For the first time in championship history the women’s race finished in a tie as MSU and WT each recorded 49 points.  The Mustangs emerged in the six-kilometer event by using the sixth runner as MSU’s Cara Mack finished 20th ahead of WT’s Gillian Law at 41st.

      Gabby Ruiz led the Mustangs effort in fourth place with a time of 22:57.20.  Michelle Krezonoski, Kim Krezonoski, and Brittany Adams added top-15 finishes.

      The Lady Buffs Emma Love was the individual medalist in 22:37.30, with teammates Michaela Johnson and Brittany Mitchell in second and third place, respectively.

      Eastern New Mexico was third with 59 points and Angelo State fourth (95).

      The top 15 finishers in each race earned All-LSC runner acclaim.
