LSC announces annual men’s basketball awards

Tarleton State’s Chuck Guy was tabbed Player of the Year to headline the Lone Star Conference men’s basketball postseason awards announced Tuesday by league officials.

The awards announcement came Tuesday night at a pre-championship banquet in Allen, Texas, where the LSC Basketball Championship tournament is set to begin on Wednesday.  First-round games will be played Wednesday, March 5, and Thursday, March 6, with the semifinals set for Friday, March 7. Both the women’s and men’s championship games are on Saturday, March 8.

Guy leads the league in assists (6.0) and assist/turnover ratio (3.5), and ranks in the top 10 in steals, free throw percentage, scoring, and three-point field goals.

Joining Guy on the first team was teammate De'Andre Upchurch, Angelo State’s Kenny Williams, Midwestern State’s Monzaigo Williams, and Texas A&M-Commerce’s LaDon Carnegie.

The top defensive award was claimed by the Lions Christian Macauley, who led the all-defensive team, a new addition to the awards this season.  He led the league in blocked shots (2.7) and ranked fourth in rebounding (7.4).

TSU’s Davene Carter, MSU’s Xavier Blackburn, West Texas A&M’s Antjuan Ball, and Eastern New Mexico’s Devone Davis joined Macauley on the inaugural squad recognizing defensive performance.

Further special awards announced Tuesday included newcomer, freshman and coach of the year.

ASU’s Williams claimed Newcomer of the Year acclaim, while A&M-C’s De'Andre Carson was named Freshman of the Year.  TSU’s Lonn Reisman was recognized as Coach of the Year.

Overall, 14 student-athletes were recognized by the all-conference program plus five on the all-defensive team.  The awards are voted upon by the league coaches.
