Tarleton State’s Kiara Wright earned Player of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year honors for the second straight year to have top billing the Lone Star Conference women’s basketball postseason awards announced Tuesday by league officials.
The awards announcement came Tuesday night at a pre-championship banquet in Allen, Texas, where the LSC Basketball Championship tournament is set to begin on Wednesday. First-round games will be played Wednesday, March 5, and Thursday, March 6, with the semifinals set for Friday, March 7. Both the women’s and men’s championship games are on Saturday, March 8.
Wright leads the LSC in scoring (20.8), rebounding (12.7), field goal percentage (.623) and steals (2.4). She recorded 19 double-double efforts including a league-high 39 points (Jan. 25) and 21 boards (Feb. 5).
With Wright on the All-LSC first team were West Texas A&M’s Devin Griffin and Chontiquah White, Midwestern State’s Andrea Carter, and Texas A&M-Commerce’s Breanna Harris.
Wright, Griffin and Carter were also distinguished for their efforts on the defensive end along with Texas Woman’s Mary Kovtun and Texas A&M-Kingsville’s Lindsey Mahone on the inaugural all-defensive team.
Further special awards announced Tuesday included newcomer, freshman and coach of the year. TSU’s Kathy Thomas earned Newcomer of the Year honors, while TWU’s Kenesha Saygo was tabbed Freshman of the Year. Coach of the Year recognition went to WT’s Mark Kellogg.
Overall, 19 student-athletes were recognized by the all-conference program plus five on the all-defensive team. The awards are voted upon by the league coaches.
