The 2014 inductee to the Lone Star Conference Hall of Honor is a former administrator and coaching great, league officials announced on Thursday.
Kathleen Brasfield from Angelo State composes the 2014 class for the LSC Hall of Honor, which recognizes outstanding individuals who have brought pride and honor to the conference through their contributions as an athlete or who have demonstrated a long-term commitment to the betterment of the conference as a coach or administrator.
Brasfield was chosen by a panel of athletic administrators throughout the league.
“Kathleen is an incredible addition to the Hall of Honor and more than matches the ideals of the group. She had a tremendous influence on the league not just as an administrator but also as a coach and mentor as well. Her induction means a great deal to me because I was fortunate enough to work with and be around her,” said LSC Interim Commissioner Jay Poerner.
Brasfield will receive the LSC’s signature Hall of Honor award, a 15-inch custom-sculpted eagle figurine mounted on a cherry wood base. The award for Brasfield is to be presented this fall.
Here is a closer look at the 2014 inductee to the LSC Hall of Honor:
Kathleen Brasfield, Angelo State, Administrator/Coach: Hired in 1978 as ASU's head volleyball coach, Brasfield devoted the majority of her professional career to the university, taking over the post of women's athletic director in 1982 and overall athletics director in 2004. A separate gift from the LeGrand's provided a new scoreboard at the subsequently renamed LeGrand Sports Complex, formerly known as the ASU Multipurpose Sports Complex, and for improvements to the track facility prior to the NCAA D-II National Championships in 2009 when ASU hosted the meet for the fifth time in school history.
She also oversaw ASU athletics grow to 13 sports, including baseball in 2005, women's golf in 2009 and women's indoor track and field in 2010. The softball team won a national championship in 2004 and the women's track and field team won in 2010 during Brasfield's tenure.
Honors and awards for Brasfield include being named a member of the LSC's All-75 Year Team in 2007 as a volleyball coach and earning the National Association for Girls and Women in Sport Pathfinder Award for her contributions to the achievement of women in sports. Brasfield served as chair of the Division II Management Council in 2010 and receiving the Under Armour Athletic Director of the Year Award for Division II's West Region in 2011.
