Golf academic awards announced

West  Texas A&M’s Ethan Peterson and Tarleton State’s Casey Wild were named the Men’s and Women’s Academic Player of the Year to headline the Lone Star Conference golf academic awards announced by league officials Monday evening at the championships.

A finance and economics major from Clovis, N.M., Peterson earned his second top academic honor.  He has a 77.1 stroke average in five tournaments this year for the Buffs.

Peterson was joined by Midwestern State’s Thomas Smith, Texas A&M-Commerce’s Kason Childress, and Cameron’s Quinton Tews on the men’s team.  Peterson and Childress were recognized for the third time.

A sophomore kinesiology major from Wodonga, Australia, Wild is second in the league with a 74.7 scoring average and has won one tournament this season.  The reigning LSC Freshman of the Year has six top-10 finishes on the year.

With Wild on the women’s team was TexAnn teammate Isabel Jimenez-Perea, WT’s Mattye Mason, A&M-C’s Marisa Delgado, and Texas A&M-Kingsville’s Meagan Cantu.  Jimenez-Perea was a repeat selection on the All-Academic Team.

To be eligible for LSC academic honors, student-athletes must carry at least a 3.30 grade point average and be at least a sophomore, both academically and athletically. The Academic Player of Year award and All-Academic Team are selected from the list of academically qualified players, with the league’s sports information directors voting based on both academic and athletic achievement.
