Baseball: Academic awards announced by LSC

Angelo State’s David Goggin headlined the Lone Star Conference Baseball All-Academic Team, as the league’s annual postseason awards were announced prior to the start of this week’s LSC Baseball Championship.

Goggin was tabbed Academic Player of the Year for the second straight year to top the All-Academic team.

The senior catcher/outfielder from Red Wing, Minn., is hitting .252 with 33 hits and 20 RBIs.  He has eight doubles, two home runs and 23 runs scored for the Rams.  Goggin leads ASU with 279 putouts with a .978 fielding percentage.

Goggin was joined by Ram teammate Sam Kohler; Eastern New Mexico’s Daniel Ward; Tarleton State’s Blain Bagley; Texas A&M-Kingsville’s Lance Elling and Zach Smith; and West Texas A&M’s Matt Cole, Trace Hansen, and Justin McAllister.

Goggin was recognized for the third straight year.

To be eligible for LSC academic honors, student-athletes must carry at least a 3.30 grade point average and have reached sophomore status both athletically and academically. The Academic Player of Year award and All-Academic Team are selected from the list of academically qualified players, with the league's sports information directors voting on the basis of both academic and athletic achievement.
