Men’s Basketball postseason awards announced

UT Permian Basin’s Daeshon Francis was named Player of the Year to headline as the Lone Star Conference men’s basketball postseason awards announced Wednesday by league officials.
The awards announcement came Wednesday night at a championship banquet in Allen, Texas, where the LSC Basketball Championship tournament is set to begin on Thursday.  First-round games will be played Thursday, March 2, and Friday, March 3, with the semifinals set for Saturday, March 4. Both the women’s and men’s championship games are on Sunday, March 5.
Francis ranks second in the LSC in field goal percentage (.574) and is third in scoring (18.3).  He is also in the top 10 in steals (1.6), rebounds (6.6), and assists (3.0).  Francis has season-bests of 34 points and 15 boards.
Joining Francis on the first team was Angelo State’s Quay King, Tarleton State’s Romond Jenkins and Chantz Chambers, Texas A&M-Commerce’s Malik Albert, and West Texas A&M’s David Chavlovich.
Defensive Player of the Year recognition went to Tarleton’s Jenkins.  He led the league in blocked shots (2.0) and ranked second in rebounding (11.1).
On the all-defensive team with Jenkins was ASU’s Prince Foster, Midwestern State’s Igor Ibaka, Texas A&M-Kingsville’s Robert Stevenson, and UTPB’s Sammy Allen.
Additional special awards announced Wednesday included newcomer, freshman and coach of the year.
The Falcons Francis was also tabbed Newcomer of the Year, while UTPB’s Andy Newman claimed Coach of the Year honors.
Tarleton’s Anthony Davis earned Freshman of the Year acclaim.
Overall, 22 student-athletes were recognized by the all-conference program plus five on the all-defensive team.  The awards are voted upon by the league coaches.
