Football: Three earn weekly honors

Lone Star Conference action starts this week with four games Saturday evening: Texas A&M-Commerce at Eastern New Mexico, Midwestern State at UT Permian Basin, Tarleton State at West Texas A&M, and Texas A&M-Kingsville at Angelo State.
   Texas A&M-Commerce, Midwestern State, and Tarleton State remain unbeaten.
   LSC football teams are 8-9 overall this season.  The squads are 2-2 combined versus the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, Northern Sun Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, and Great Northwest Athletic Conference teams, which are also in NCAA Super Regional Four.

LSC FOOTBALL ON ESPN3
The Lone Star Conference game between Texas A&M-Kingsville and Texas A&M-Commerce on Thursday, August 30 was featured as part of the Division II Football Showcase schedule.
   The first 19 games of the football showcase are predetermined games, 17 of which are conference matchups. An additional three flex games — intended to highlight crucial matchups — will be finalized later in the season and played in November.
   ESPN3 is ESPN’s live multiscreen sports network, a destination that delivers thousands of exclusive sports events annually. It is accessible on computers via ESPN.com/watch and on smartphones, tablets and streaming devices through the ESPN app. The network currently is available nationwide at no additional cost to fans who receive their high-speed internet connection or video subscription from an affiliated service provider. It also is available at no cost to U.S. college students and U.S.-based military personnel via computers, smartphones and tablets connected to on-campus educational and on-base military broadband and Wi-Fi networks.
 
PLAYERS OF THE WEEK
OFFENSIVE
Layton Rabb, Midwestern State University, SR, Accounting, QB, Llano, Texas, Llano HS
Rabb threw for 334 yards and three touchdowns to lead 10th-ranked Midwestern State to a 38-17 win over No. 2 West Florida Saturday night at Memorial Stadium. The senior from Llano completed 14 of his last 17 passes for 179 and three TDs to pace the MSU Texas offense to four second half touchdowns as the erased an 11-point halftime deficit to outscore the Argonauts 35-3 in the second half. Rabb connected with Michael Berry (1) and Xavier Land (15) for scores in the third quarter, then hit Anthony Tennison for a 17-yard score TD to give the Mustangs a 24-17 lead with 9:18 to play. Rabb tops the nation with eight touchdown passes through the first two weeks, while leading the LSC pass efficiency (199.0) and passing yards (607).
 
DEFENSIVE
Paul Manus, Midwestern State University, SR, Business/Marketing, LB, Claremont, Calif., Claremont HS (College of the Seqouias)
Manus keyed a strong Midwestern State defense by intercepting two passes, while making seven tackles in a 38-17 win over No. 2 West Florida Saturday night at Memorial Stadium. The senior from Claremont, Calif. iced the game with a 59-yard interception return for a touchdown staking MSU Texas to a three-touchdown lead with 2:53 to play. Manus also stood tall stopping West Florida's fake punt attempt by tackling Asante Griffin five yards short of the first down on 4th-and-9 on the UWF 46-yard line. The Mustangs cashed in the short field to take a 31-17 lead following a 2-yard run by Adrian Seales with 3:52 to play. Manus added an interception in the end zone on the Argonauts final offensive play of the game.
 
SPECIAL TEAMS
Larry Johnson, Angelo State University, JR, Finance, PR/KR, Fort Worth, Texas, Arlington Heights HS
Johnson broke off an 88-yard kickoff return for a touchdown on Saturday against Abilene Christian in the second quarter. Johnson's return sparked a 24-0 run by the Rams who would lead at halftime but dropped their first game of the season against the Wildcats. Johnson caught the kickoff at the 12-yard line, found room in the middle of the field behind his blockers and then raced down the home sideline at Wildcat Field for the first ASU touchdown of the day. It was his first kickoff return for a touchdown in his career and the first special teams touchdown of the season for ASU.
