Football: Three recognized for top performances

LSC FOOTBALL

Lone Star Conference teams are each playing a non-conference game this week.

   Texas A&M-Commerce, Midwestern State, Tarleton State, and Angelo State started the season with wins last week.

   LSC football teams are 4-5 overall this season.  The squads are 2-1 combined versus the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, Northern Sun Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, and Great Northwest Athletic Conference teams, which are also in NCAA Super Regional Four.

LSC FOOTBALL ON ESPN3

The Lone Star Conference game between Texas A&M-Kingsville and Texas A&M-Commerce on Thursday, August 30 was featured as part of the Division II Football Showcase schedule.

   The first 19 games of the football showcase are predetermined games, 17 of which are conference matchups. An additional three flex games — intended to highlight crucial matchups — will be finalized later in the season and played in November.

   ESPN3 is ESPN’s live multiscreen sports network, a destination that delivers thousands of exclusive sports events annually. It is accessible on computers via ESPN.com/watch and on smartphones, tablets and streaming devices through the ESPN app. The network currently is available nationwide at no additional cost to fans who receive their high-speed internet connection or video subscription from an affiliated service provider. It also is available at no cost to U.S. college students and U.S.-based military personnel via computers, smartphones and tablets connected to on-campus educational and on-base military broadband and Wi-Fi networks.

PLAYERS OF THE WEEK

OFFENSIVE

Layton Rabb, Midwestern State University, SR, Accounting, QB, Llano, Texas, Llano HS

Rabb posted a program single-game passing efficiency record (320.2) leading Midwestern State to touchdowns on each of his six drives Saturday in a 55-12 season opening rout of Humboldt State. The senior from Llano completed 15-of-17 passes for 273 yards and five touchdowns averaging 16.1 yards per attempt. It was his third five-TD performance falling one shy of matching his program high mark of six set last season at Eastern New Mexico.

 

DEFENSIVE

Hunter Kyle, Angelo State University, SO, Business Management, LB, Wichita Falls, Texas, Rider HS

Kyle started his sophomore season with two interceptions and 6.5 tackles in a 24-17 win by Angelo State on Saturday at Western Oregon. Kyle had 66 tackles and one interception last season. His two picks against the Wolves was part of a defensive effort that forced three turnovers and limited WOU to only 313 yards on the day.

SPECIAL TEAMS

Kristov Martinez, Texas A&M University-Commerce, SR, Master of Education in Secondary Education, K, Edinburg, Texas, Edinburg HS

Martinez performed in the clutch when the Lions needed it most in the 2OT win over Kingsville. He made a 34-yard field goal with 20 seconds remaining to tie the game at 23-all and send the contest to overtime. He was 4-for-4 on PAT attempts, including the game-winning point after the touchdown in the second overtime.
