Men’s Tennis All-Conference honors announced

Lubbock Christian sophomore Kelly Giese was named the Lone Star Conference Men’s Tennis Player of the Year as the league announced its annual men’s tennis awards on Wednesday (April 30) at the LSC Tennis Championships Reception at Hilton Garden Inn in Arlington, Texas.

Giese, who is from Manhattan Beach, Calif., posted an 8-0 record in conference play at line 1 singles and has a 13-match winning streak entering the postseason. He also helped record five league wins at No. 1 doubles. Giese is a first-team all-conference selection in singles and doubles (with Jordan Georgiev) and is a member of the league’s nine-player Sportsmanship Team, which exemplifies outstanding sportsmanship, character and ethical conduct while displaying the true spirit of competition and college tennis.

Midwestern State’s Stephen Slocombe earned the title of Senior of the Year. LCU junior Andres De Los Rios and UT Tyler sophomore Martin Despodov shared the honor of Newcomer of the Year, while MSU’s Filip Vacula was voted Freshman of the Year.

Slocombe and UT Permian Basin senior Jonathan Vega were named Co-Sportsmanship Players of the Year to headline the Sportsmanship Team. Players on the squad were nominated by opposing coaches.

UT Tyler head coach Chris Bizot was named LSC Men's Tennis Coach of the Year after guiding the Patriots to the LSC title with a perfect record in league play.

The awards are determined by vote of the league’s nine head coaches.
