LSC recognizes media with annual awards
Three sportswriters - Bob Hersom, Herb Jacobs and Greg Jaklewicz - and broadcaster Jeremy Bryant were honored Wednesday as the annual Lone Star Conference media awards were announced by league officials.
Hersom, Jacobs and Jaklewicz shared the Kirk Hill Award as the league's top sportswriters, while Bryant earned his second Jake Trussell Award as the outstanding broadcaster of the year.
The awards, which recognize those who best promote the LSC and its members through their work in the media, are selected annually by sports information directors at the LSC's 15 member institutions.
Hersom is in his 28th year as a sportswriter for the Oklahoman covering state colleges. He has also been named Oklahoma Sportswriter of the Year by the National Sportscasters and Sportswriters Association in 1991 and 1996.
Jacobs was honored for the second time after receiving the award in 2002. He began writing for the Lawton Constitution in 1959 before retiring in 2002. He has continued to cover Cameron athletics since retiring and provides a weekly column reminiscing about former athletes from the area. In February 2008, Jacobs was inducted into the inaugural class of the CU Athletics Hall of Fame.
Jaklewicz has been with the Amarillo Globe since July 2007. He has been a full-time journalist since 1980 including serving as editor of The Canyon News. During 2007-08, he was the beat writer for West Texas A&M football along with high school basketball and track. He also covered WTAMU cross country and soccer.
Bryant, who was also named LSC broadcaster of the Year in 2006, has been the voice of Angelo State Athletics for seven years. He serves as the play-by-play announcer for ASU football, men's and women's basketball, baseball and softball games and is the sports director for Foster Communications, a group of four radio stations in San Angelo.
