Basketball: Weekly awards announced
Four student-athletes were named Lone Star Conference Basketball Players of the Week for their efforts last week, league officials announced today.
LSC BASKETBALL PLAYERS OF THE WEEK
LSC North Women's
Verressa Gaston, Northeastern State University
Sr., Post, Ft. Gibson, Okla./Ft. Gibson High School
Gaston led the way as the RiverHawks picked two Lone Star
Conference crossover victories over Midwestern State and Tarleton
State. Gaston picked up her second double-double of the year
in an 18 point, 16 rebound performance against the Mustangs and
followed with 12 points, five rebound performance against
Tarleton. Gaston averaged 15 points and 10.5 rebounds in the
two RiverHawks victories.
LSC South Women's
Audrey Maxwell, Abilene Christian University
Jr., Center, Abilene, Texas/Abilene High School
The ACU junior center posted a pair of dominating performances last
week to lead the Wildcats to wins over Southwestern Oklahoma State
(73-60 on Thursday) and Cameron (73-58 on Saturday).
Maxwell's play helped the Wildcats run their winning streak to a
season-best three games as they improved to 5-6 on the young
season. Maxwell averaged 19.0 points and 8.0 rebounds per
game to lead ACU to the pair of victories. The LSC leader in
field goal percentage hit 62 percent of her shots (13 of 21) in the
two games, and also buried 86 percent of her free throw attempts
(12 of 14). The LSC leader in blocked shots averaged 4.0 per
game. She dominated the Lady Aggies inside on Saturday as she
finished with 28 points and eight rebounds to go along with four
blocks and one assist in 26 minutes of play.
LSC North Men's
Terrell Carpenter, East Central University
Sr., Guard, Chicago, Ill./Harlan Community Academy
Carpenter shot 56 percent from the field and was a perfect 18-of-18
free throws in two games last week as ECU lost to Eastern New
Mexico 63-61 and beat West Texas A&M 75-65. Carpenter also
averaged 4.0 rebounds, 5.0 assists and 1.5 steals in the two games.
Carpenter has led the Tigers in scoring in six of the team's 11
games this season.
LSC South Men's
Dejan Sencanski, Abilene Christian University
Jr., Forward, Zrenjanin, Serbia/Zrenjaninska Gimnazija High
School
The ACU junior forward was dominating in leading the Wildcats to a
pair of wins over No. 8-ranked Southwestern Oklahoma State and
Cameron last week. Sencanski averaged 26.0 points and 10.0
rebounds and hit 71 percent of his shots from the floor (20 of 28),
including 67 percent from 3-point range (6 of 9). In Thursday
night's 87-66 win over the eighth-ranked Bulldogs -- ACU's first
win over a nationally ranked opponent since a March 1999 win over
Pittsburg State in the NCAA Division II South Central Region
Tournament semifinals -- Sencanski had 25 points and seven points
to go along with three assists and two steals in 30 minutes of
action. Sencanski hit 5 of 7 from 3-point range as the
Wildcats blew out the Bulldogs. In Saturday's win over
Cameron, Sencanski had 27 points (11 of 14 shooting) and pulled
down 13 rebounds to lead the Wildcats to their fourth 100-point
effort of the season.
