Basketball: Four players receive weekly honors

A&M-C's Melissa Bratton

Four student-athletes were named Lone Star Conference Basketball Players of the Week for their efforts last week, league officials announced today.

LSC BASKETBALL PLAYERS OF THE WEEK
LSC North Women's
Melissa Bratton, Texas A&M University-Commerce
Sr., Guard, Mt. Pleasant, Texas/Univ. of Louisiana-Lafayette

Posted first double-double of her career, scoring 17 points and grabbing 11 rebounds in the Lions' 78-74 win over SOSU. Against the Savage Storm, eight of her 11 rebounds were on the offensive side. She also played a crucial role on the defensive side of the ball, guarding SOSU's leading scorer Jessica Hocker in holding her to 12 points. The 12 points by Hocker were her third lowest output of the season. The LSC leader in free throws attempted got to the free throw line just four times. She had 16 points in the 75-69 win over NSU. For the season, A&M-C is 9-1 when she scores in double figures.

LSC South Women's
Courtney Lee, West Texas A&M University
Jr., G, Arlington, Texas/Kennedale HS

Lee, the reigning LSC South Player of the Week, again was a solid force for WTAMU as the Lady Buffs remained undefeated in league play by beating MSU, 72-51, and TSU, 75-72. She collected 14 points, three rebounds, two assists and a block against MSU on Wednesday. Then, during Saturday's match-up against the then-undefeated TSU, Lee tallied 16 points, including a buzzer beater three-pointer that lifted the Lady Buffs to victory and the lone spot atop LSC South standings.

LSC North Men's
Scooby Johnson, Texas A&M University-Commerce
Sr., Forward, Buffalo, Texas/Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi

Shot 64% from the field and scored 20+ points in back to back wins by A&M-C over NSU and SOSU. He also came up with nine rebounds in the two games as well as a team-best seven steals from his forward position and made his first 10 shots from the field against the Savage Storm. Johnson combined with teammate Kevin Widemond to outscore SOSU in the first half 33 to 25. He has scored in double digits in all 19 games in 2007-08.

LSC South Men's
Eric Williams, Tarleton State University
Jr., F, Long Beach, Calif./Wilson HS

Williams averaged 16.5 points and 12.0 rebounds this week as the No. 20 Texans claimed two LSC South Division victories.  The junior recorded a double-double in the overtime win against WTAMU Saturday with 25 points and 13 rebounds while pulling down 11 rebounds - both career highs - and scoring eight points at TAMUK Wednesday.  With Tarleton trailing by two in overtime, Williams hit a jumper from the top of the key to tie the game at 70 with 2:21 on the clock.  With 29 seconds left in the second half, the Texan also tied the game at 63 with a jumper, the basket which eventually sent the game in overtime.  He also got a steal at the end of regulation for the Texans.  Williams averaged .500 from the floor and .750 from the arc this week while also recording an assist, a block and four steals.  The junior averaged 38.5 minutes per game this week.
