Women's Basketball: WTAMU, UCO to play for regional championship

Central Oklahoma upset Washburn, 72-63, and West Texas A&M edged Emporia State, 86-83, in the semifinals of the NCAA Division II South Central Regional in Canyon, Texas, to set up an all Lone Star Conference regional championship game at 7 p.m. on Monday.

The Bronchos and Lady Buffs will play for the third time this season with the most recent meeting in the LSC Championship game last week.  WTAMU has won both previous meetings, 86-79 (December 4) and 66-59 (March 7).  The winner earns a trip to the NCAA Division II Elite Eight in San Antonio, Texas, March 24-27.

Here's a closer look at Saturday's regional semifinal contests:

UCO 72, WU 63

Lizzie Brenner scored 24 points and Ashley Beckley had six of her 10 in a game-deciding 15-2 run that put Central Oklahoma in control and the No. 15-ranked Bronchos went on to topple No. 8 Washburn 72-63 here Saturday night in the semifinals of the NCAA Division II South Central Regional.

It was UCO's first-ever win over the Lady Blues and avenged a loss in the semifinals of last year's regional.  The Bronchos improved to 27-5 and moved into Monday's 7 p.m. finals against West Texas A&M.

WTAMU 86, ESU 83

West Texas A&M defeated Emporia State, 86-83, Saturday night in the semifinals of NCAA Division II South Central Regional basketball action at the First United Bank Center in Canyon, Texas.

The win lifts WT to 27-5 for the season, while Emporia State finishes their season with a 26-6 record.

"This is what you do in playoffs, survive and advance," said head coach Krista Gerlich. "I felt like our girls really went to battle tonight and just wouldn't be denied."

Joni Unruh tallied 11 first-half points to help the Lady Buffs to a six point halftime advantage, 40-34.  WT held an early eight-point lead, only to see the Hornets come back to tie the score.  The Lady Buffs then responded by scoring eight of the final 10 points of the half.
