Football: WTAMU, MSU advance with comeback victories
West Texas A&M and Midwestern State both advanced to the second round of the NCAA Division II playoffs with memorable comeback wins on Saturday.
WTAMU (11-1) prevailed in overtime, 30-27, over Abilene Christian (8-3) by erasing a 15-point fourth quarter deficit.
A 50-yard pass from Dalton Bell to Ramon Perry with just over a minute to play sent the game into overtime. With the momentum, WTAMU scored first in the extra period with a 20-yard field goal by John Roberts. The Wildcats 34-yard field goal attempt on the following possession was blocked by the Buffs to end the game and ACU's season.
The Buffs will play at Chadron State in Chadron, Neb., on Nov. 25.
MSU (10-2) also kept its season alive with a pair of touchdowns in the final 3:41 of regulation to defeat Missouri Western, 28-26.
The combination of Daniel Polk, DelJuan Lee and the post route led to two late scores for the Mustangs. First, Polk hit Lee for a 29-yard touchdown with 3:41 remaining in the contest. Then after a three-and-out stand by the MSU defense, Polk found Lee again from the Griffon 48 for the game-winning score.
The Mustangs next opponent is Northwest Missouri State in Maryville, Mo., on Nov. 25.
In the second appearance by each team in the NCAA playoffs, WTAMU and MSU both earned their first-ever wins in postseason play.
