Football: Four LSC teams win season openers
Four LSC teams picked up non-conference victories in the opening
week of the 2007 football season. Southwestern Oklahoma
downed Northwestern Oklahoma 33-7, Midwestern State defeated Adams
State 41-15, Tarleton State beat East Central 44-7 and Eastern New
Mexico ran past Bacone 63-20.
Texas A&M-Commerce fell to No. 7 Pittsburg
State, 28-14, after the Gorillas scored two fourth-quarter
touchdowns, while East Central dropped a 44-7 decision to TSU.
Next week, 11 of 13 league teams will be in
action on the gridiron including a pair of crossover contests on
Saturday -- Abilene Christian at Central Oklahoma and Texas
A&M-Kingsville at Southwestern Oklahoma.
LSC PLAYERS OF THE WEEK
LSC North Offensive
Terry Mayo, Texas A&M-Commerce, Jr., QB, Greensboro,
N.C./Reedley JC
Mayo threw for 260 yards, two touchdowns and an interception in
the Lions' 28-14 loss to No. 7 Pittsburg State. The 260 yards
passing by Mayo are the most by an A&M-Commerce quarterback
since the final game of the 2004 season when Buster Faulkner had
281 against West Texas A&M.He also had a 71-yard touchdown pass
to JaMichael Pass for the longest reception at A&M-Commerce
since a 72-yard reception by Victory Bennett from Buster Faulker
against Eastern New Mexico on October 16, 2004.

LSC North Defensive
Andre Morgan, Southwestern Oklahoma, Sr., DB, Garland, Texas/South HS/Troy State
Morgan, a senior transfer from Troy State, made an instant
impact in the Bulldogs lineup. He had seven tackles, including a
sack of the Northwestern quarterback that resulted in a safety for
the game's first score. Morgan also recoved a fumble. NWOSU
finished the game with 147 yards of total
offense.
LSC North Special Teams
Patrick Weaver, Southwestern Oklahoma, Jr., KR, Oklahoma
City, Okla./Bishop McGuiness
Weaver added to his repuation as one of the most dangerous return
men in the LSC as he brought back a punt 87 yards for a score in
SWOSU's 33-7 victory over Northwestern Oklahoma. Weaver has now
brought back three kickoffs or punts for scores in the last two
years. He also led the team in rushing with 71 yards on six
carries, including scoring on a 37-yard run.
LSC South Offensive
Daniel Polk, Midwestern State, Sr., Quarterback, Dallas,
Texas/South Oak Cliff
Polk became MSU's all-time rushing on his first carry of the
season when he blew past current Oakland Raider running back
Dominic Rhodes on a 54-yard scoring burst less than three minutes
into the season. The senior quarter back now has 2,589 career
rushing yards after finishing the game with 68 yards on seven
carries. But he was more lethal through the air where he completed
28-of-37 (75.7 percent) of his passes for 295 yards and a pair of
scoring strikes. In all, Polk accounted for 363 yards and three
touchdowns as he led the Mustangs to the school's second most
prolific outing in terms of total offense. MSU finished with 678
yards on 93 plays for a 7.3 yards per play
average.
LSC South Defensive
Ryan Craven, Midwestern State, Fr., Strong Safety,
Rockwall, Texas/Rockwall HS
It didn't take the true freshman long to make an impact as a
starting strong saftey for the No. 23 Mustangs. Craven intercepted
Adams State's Billy Lindquist on the first play from scrimmage of
the season. The 5-11, 165-pounder from Rockwall, Texas led the
Mustangs with seven tackles, including three solo and broke up
another pass.
LSC South Special Teams
Cason Colliflower, Midwestern State, Fr., Kicker,
Weatherford, Texas/Weatherford HS
Colliflower converted field goals of 33 and 44 yards and was
5-for-5 on point-after attempts to finish with 11 points in his
collegiate debut as a true freshman.
