Football: Abilene Christian claims win over Texas State
Abilene Christian bounced back from a loss last week to post the
Lone Star Conference's second win over a Championship Subdivision
team with a 45-27 triumph over Texas State, a member of the
Southland Conference. The LSC improved to 2-1 this season
against FCS teams.
The third week of the 2007 season also included
wins by Eastern New Mexico, West Texas A&M, East Central,
Tarleton State, Texas A&M-Commerce and Midwestern State.
Seven games are on the LSC slate for next
Saturday including five crossover contests and two
non-conference games.
LSC PLAYERS OF THE WEEK
Co-LSC North Offensive
Trent Miller, Texas A&M-Commerce, So., QB, Conroe,
Texas/Conroe HS/Sam Houston State
In his first collegiate start at A&M-Commerce, Miller threw
for 225 yards and three touchdowns to lead Texas A&M-Commerce
to its first win over Texas A&M-Kingsville since 2001. It is
the first time since Sept. 18, 2004 against Northeastern State that
the Lions had three touchdown passes. He led the Lions on scoring
drives in each quarter.
Marcus Johnson, East Central, So., QB, Abilene,
Texas/Abilene HS
Johnson set school records for touchdown passes in a game (6) and
yards passing in a game (386) as East Central beat Angelo State
48-31. Johnson completed passes to 11 different receivers and ended
up with TD passes of 4, 6, 73, 30, 17 and 2 yards. His 73-yarder to
Marcus Pitts for a TD in the second quarter was the longest pass
play of the night.
Co-LSC North Defensive
Will Clewis, Central Oklahoma, Sr., Linebacker, Fort Worth,
Texas/Eastern Hills
Senior standout spearheaded UCO's dominating defensive effort in a
frustrating 17-7 non-conference loss to Emporia State. Clewis
finished with 15 tackles, including 2.5 for loss, as the Bronchos
allowed just 67 total yards. The Hornets, who scored both
touchdowns on interception returns, managed just 38 yards rushing
in 37 attempts and hit 5-of-15 passes for 29 yards.
Robert McDonald-Douglas, East Central, Jr., Linebacker,
Pasadena, Texas/Deer Park HS
McDonald-Douglas led the Tigers with 15 total tackles and two
tackles for lost yards in the game.
LSC North Special Teams

LSC South Offensive
Bernard Scott, Abilene Christian, Jr., RB, Vernon, Texas/Wichita
Falls HS
Scott scored three touchdowns on the ground and one as a receiver
as the Wildcats picked up their first win of the season with a
45-27 win over Texas State. Scott had three touchdowns in the
first half (two rushing, one receiving) before putting the
finishing touches on the upset with a 17-yard TD run in the fourth
quarter.
LSC South Defensive
David Reed, Eastern New Mexico, Sr., Defensive End, Loomis,
Calif./Del Oro HS
Reed helped the Eastern New Mexico defense limit Northeastern
State to 239 yards of offense (3.4 yards per play) as the
Greyhounds improved to 2-0 on the season. Reed made the play of the
game in the fourth quarter, when he sacked NSU's quarterback,
forcing a fumble that was returned 58 yards for the game-winning
touchdown. He finished the contest with four tackles, a sack, a
forced fumble and one quarterback pressure.
LSC South Special Teams
Stephen Arnold, Tarleton State, So., K, McKinney,
Texas/McKinney
Arnold kicked two field goals, including a career-long 39-yarder
to help lift the No. 22 Texans over the No. 16 Savage Storm.
He was also five of five in extra points to score 11 points in the
contest.
