Football: South Division dominates crossover action

MSU's BJ Mathis

The Lone Star Conference South Division dominated crossover action this week with five victories.  Midwestern State, Abilene Christian, Angelo State, West Texas A&M and Eastern New Mexico all posted wins at home over LSC North Division opponents.  Additionally, the Mustangs, Buffaloes and Greyhounds remained perfect this year to join Tarleton State with a 3-0 overall record.
In non-conference action, Southwestern Oklahoma beat Oklahoma Panhandle State, 38-8, while Texas A&M-Kingsville fell to Western Oregon, 22-14.
Next week's schedule includes six crossover contests Saturday evening.

LSC PLAYERS OF THE WEEK
LSC North Offensive
Ben Birmingham, Central Oklahoma, Jr., Tailback, Luther, Okla./Luther HS

Junior newcomer rushed for 145 yards in just 15 carries in UCO's 27-18 road loss to Angelo State.  He unleased a 78-yard TD dash in the third period - the 14th-longest scoring run in school history - and had 108 yards on seven second-half attempts.

LSC North Defensive
Broderick Mondy, Northeastern State, Jr., Safety, Plano, Texas/Plano East HS

The Lone Star Conference's leading tackler displayed another great performance in a losing effort against the #16 Midwestern State Mustangs.  Mondy's 17 total tackles gives him 45 for the season.

LSC North Special Teams
Daniel Swaim, Texas A&M-Commerce, Jr., Punter, Kilgore, Texas/Lon Morris JC/Kilgore HS
Swaim solidified his role as the starting punter for the Lions with six punts for 313 yards. His first punt of the contest went for 70 yards - the longest punt in school history since WIll Schale had a 74 yard punt in 1998.

LSC South Offensive
Michael Benton, Eastern New Mexico, Sr., Quarterback, Everman, Texas/Everman Bean HS

Quarterback Michael Benton turned in another strong performance, accounting for three of Eastern's touchdowns. He finished with 167 yards rushing and two touchdowns, including a 53-yarder. He also connected on a 27-yard touchdown pass. On 13 carries, he averaged 12.8 yards.

LSC South Defensive
Jared Brock, West Texas A&M, Jr., Linebacker, Abernathy, Texas/Abernathy

Junior Jared Brock spearheaded a strong defensive effort for the Buffs during Saturday night's victory over Texas A&M-Commerce. The Abernathy, Texas, native led the squad with nine tackles (including five solo) and notched his first sack and interception of the season. The team would have held the Lions to under ten points but Commerce was able to put up a late touchdown with Brock and the WTAMU first team on the sidelines.

LSC South Special Teams
B.J. Mathis, Midwestern State, Jr., Return Specialist, Dallas, Texas/Richardson Berkner HS

Mathis returned a punt 70 yards for a touchdown as No. 16 Midwestern State rolled to a 38-7 win over Northeastern State Saturday afternoon at Memorial Stadium. The 6-1, 185-pound junior from Dallas averaged 20.3 yards on seven returns as he piled up the second-most punt return yards in MSU's single game history.
