Football: West Texas A&M wins battle of undefeated teams
After seven weeks of play, two Lone Star Conference teams, West
Texas A&M and Tarleton State remain undefeated. The Buffs
handed Midwestern State its first loss, 25-20, to stay perfect,
while the Texans earned their first-ever victory in Kingsville,
Texas, against the Javelinas, 31-21.
Two LSC games went beyond regulation as Texas
A&M-Commerce edged Southeastern Oklahoma, 41-39 in three
overtimes, and Angelo State defeated Eastern New Mexico, 28-21 in
double overtime.
On Thursday night, Central Oklahoma rallied to
beat East Central, 24-21, and stay on top of the LSC North Division
standings.
In crossover play, Abilene Christian topped
Northeastern State, 58-7.
Action next week includes another South Division
battle as MSU plays at TSU, while ENMU and WTAMU meet for the Wagon
Wheel game in Canyon, Texas.
LSC PLAYERS OF THE WEEK
Co-LSC North Offensive
Terry Mayo, Texas A&M-Commerce, Jr., Quarterback, Greensboro,
N.C./Reedley JC
Mayo came off the bench and had a hand in all five touchdowns in
the Lions' 41-39 triple overtime win over Southeastern Oklahoma. He
went on to throw for 240 yards and three touchdowns, completing 18
of 26 passes as well as two rushing touchdowns. The three
touchdowns are the most by an A&M-Commerce quarterback since
Trent Miller threw for three in the Lions' other win in 2007
against Texas A&M-Kingsville.
Ryan O'Hara, Central Oklahoma, Sr., Quarterback, Pasadena,
Calif./John Muir HS
Former starter came off the bench to throw for 183 yards and two
touchdowns in the second half to rally UCO from a 21-10 deficit to
a 24-21 road LSC North win. Started all last year and the
first three games this season before being benched, then came in to
start the second half and had TD passes of 10 and 41 yards - double
his season total - to key UCO's comeback. Game-winning score
came on third-and-goal from the ECU 10 when O'Hara avoided heavy
pressure after a bad snap from shotgun formation and hit tight end
Brock Gruenberg for the score.
LSC North Defensive
Jairus Martin, Southeastern Oklahoma State, Sr., Defensive Back,
Antlers, Okla./Antlers HS Martin picked
off two passes against Texas A&M-Commerce...his first
interception was a touchdown saving grab on a Commerce pass in the
endzone...his second pick was returned 65 yards for a touchdown,
the first of the game...he also tallied five tackles, including
three solo.
LSC North Special Teams
Chris Quiroga, Texas A&M-Commerce, Jr., Kicker, Simi Valley,
Calif./Moorpark JC

triple overtime win over Southeastern Oklahoma State. He made a
season-long 41-yard field goal in the win. For the season he is
17-for-18 on extra points and three-for-four on field goals.
Co-LSC South Offensive
B.J. Vickers, West Texas A&M, Jr., Receiver, Venice,
Calif./Venice HS
With the game hanging in the balance in the fourth quarter, Vickers
took a wide receiver screen and eluded several Mustang defenders to
race 55 yard for what would prove to the game-winning touchdown as
the Buffs defeated No. 12 Midwestern State. The Venice, Calif.,
native finished the game with four catches and 90 yard receiving
for the ball game
Daniel Thomas, Angelo State, Jr., Running Back, Taylor,
Texas/Taylor HS
Thomas rushed for 149 yards and three scores as the Rams downed
Eastern New Mexico, 28-21, in double overtime. Thomas scored
on runs of one, five and one yards in the victory. He also moved
into fifth place on the ASU all-time rushing list, now with 1,861
career yards.
LSC South Defensive
Jared Brock, West Texas A&M, Jr., Linebacker, Abernathy,
Texas/Abernathy HS
The Buffalo defense stood tall during its biggest test of the
season on Saturday night and Brock was again the unit's leader as
he helped limit the top-ranked MSU defense to their lowest
offensive output of the season. The Abernathy, Texas, native
collected a team-high eight tackles and notched his third sack of
the season. Brock also blocked a second quarter Mustang field goal
attempt.
LSC South Special Teams
Nathan Robinson, Tarleton State, Jr., CB, Rockingham, N.C./Richmond
Senior HS
Robinson gave the Texans good field position in each of his three
returns that gained yardage. The average field position after
he returned the ball on punts was the Tarleton 44-yardline and on
kickoffs was the Tarleton 42-yardline.
