Football: Offensive outbursts highlight LSC games

There was no shortage of points scored in six Lone Star
Conference contests this week. West Texas A&M led the
offensive surge with 62 points in front of a LSC and school record
23,276 fans at Kimbrough Memorial Stadium. The Buffs defeated
Eastern New Mexico to capture the Wagon Wheel traveling trophy and
remain undefeated this season.
Tarleton State stayed perfect on the year with
a 44-32 comeback win over Midwestern State, while Abilene Christian
posted 52 points in a win over Angelo State in South Division
action.
In the North, Texas A&M-Commerce and
Southeastern Oklahoma earned victories, while East Central defeated
Texas A&M-Kingsville in the only crossover game of the
week.
Next week's schedule features WTAMU at ACU in a
battle for the upper hand in the South Division and overall LSC
title pictures with TSU.
LSC PLAYERS OF THE WEEK
LSC North Offensive
Kolby Williams, Southeastern Oklahoma State, Sr., QB,
Bartlesville, Okla./Bartlesville HS
Williams posted a 22-of-32 passing effort with four touchdowns and
no interceptions to lead SOSU to a 40-24 win over Southwestern
Oklahoma State which snapped a four-game losing streak.
Williams connected with four different receivers on his TD tosses,
and seven different receivers overall on the night.
LSC North Defensive
Andree Smith, Texas A&M-Commerce, Jr., Defensive Line, Big
Sandy, Texas/Big Sandy HS
A key reason that the Lions defense held NSU to 119 yards of total
offense. As a defensive end, the Lions have held a team less than
100 yards on four occasions rushing and under 125 yards rushing on
six occasions.
LSC North Special Teams
Chris Quiroga, Texas A&M-Commerce, Jr., Kicker, Simi Valley,
Calif./Moorpark JC
Made three field goals and three extra points in the Lions' 30-3
win over Northeastern State. He has made six out of seven field
goals and 19 out of 20 extra points on the season.
LSC South Offensive
Bernard Scott, Abilene Christian, Jr., Running Back, Vernon,
Texas/Wichita Falls HS
Bernard Scott recorded the third-best single-game rushing
performance in ACU history to lead the Wildcats to 707 yards of
total offense in ACU's 52-28 win over LSC South Division rival
Angelo State. Scott finished the night with 231 yards and
three touchdowns on just 18 carries as he scored on runs of 14, 62
and 80 yards to help the Wildcats rack up 50-plus points for the
third time in their last five games. Scott's 80-yard
touchdown run is the 11th-longest run and 10th-longest scoring run
in ACU football history. Scott has 994 yards and 12
touchdowns on just 125 carries this season and needs just 218 yards
to set a new ACU single-season rushing record.
LSC South Defensive
Jamaal Steamer, Tarleton State, So., DE, Temple,
Texas/Temple
Though Jamaal Steamer did not lead the Texans in tackles Saturday,
the sophomore led the team in tackles for loss (3.0 for 13) and
sacks (2.0 for 8). He recorded three solo and three assisted
tackles and recorded the final sack of the game for the Texans on a
third and 15 form the MSU 25-yard line for the Mustangs. MSU
then went for the fourth down conversion, trailing 44-32, but the
pass was incomplete as Steamer put pressure on the quarterback.
LSC South Special Teams
Nathan Robinson, Tarleton State, Sr., DB, Rockingham,
N.C./Richmond Senior HS
In a battle of field position, the Tarleton Texans won the game
thanks to special teams play like that of Robinson. Robinson,
who returned a punt return 87 yards for a touchdown at the end of
the second quarter to put the Texans ahead at the break 27-23,
returned the ball a total of 146 yards, including two kickoff
returns for 59 yards. He had a long of 42 yards and was
instrumental with teammate Travis Evans, who had three kickoff
returns for 88 yards, gave the Texans an average field position of
on kickoffs Saturday was the 50-yard line and overall was the
Tarleton 41-yard line.
