LSC announces Track & Field awards
Abilene Christian topped the All-Lone Star Conference honorees with 28 of the 51 student-athletes on the list for their efforts at the 2007 LSC Men's and Women's Track & Field Championships. The list was announced Tuesday by league officials.
ACU's men and women swept the team championships for the second straight year at the 2007 LSC meet, which ended May 6 in Commerce, Texas. The Wildcat men had 12 all-conference performers, while the women added 16.
The list of all-conference performers includes the winner of each event at the conference meet, including all members of the winning relay teams, plus any athlete who scores at least 14 points at the meet. In all, 23 men and 28 women were recognized by the all-conference program, including at least one from each of the six member institutions that sponsor track and field teams.
In addition to the announcement of All-LSC performers, the league recognized five student-athletes and two coaches with special honors.
On the men's side, Justin Boyd of Angelo State picked up the Cap Shelton Award as Outstanding Male Track Athlete, while ASU's Spencer Tyler earned the Oscar Stahan Award for the second straight year as Outstanding Male Field Athlete. Texas A&M-Kingsville's Glen Sefcik was honored as Men's Track Coach of the Year.
For the women, ASU's Trista McIntyre won the Wes Kittley Award as Outstanding Female Track Athlete, while ASU's Adree Lakey and ACU's Jessica Withrow shared the David Noble Award for a second consecutive year as Outstanding Female Field Athletes. ASU's James Reid earned Women's Track Coach of the Year accolades.
The special awards were voted upon by the league coaches.
Boyd won the 400 meter hurdles and anchored ASU's first-place 4x400 meter relay team. Tyler had conference championship efforts in the shot put and discus while finishing fourth in the hammer and 12th in the javelin.
McIntyre claimed two conference titles in the 1,500- and 3,000-meter runs, while Lakey scored a meet-high 34 points after winning the hammer and javelin in addition to finishing second in the shot put and third in the discus. Withrow prevailed in the heptathlon and was also second in the high jump and fourth in the 100-meter hurdles.
Sefcik led TAMUK's men and women to fifth- and third-place finishes, respectively, at the LSC meet, while Reid guided the ASU men and women to runner-up finishes.
Many of the LSC track and field athletes are now preparing for the end of the 2007 outdoor season with the NCAA Division II Men's and Women's Track & Field Championships, set for May 24-26 in Charlotte, N.C.
