Track & Field: Weekly awards announced

Student-athletes were named Lone Star Conference Track & Field Athletes of the Week for their efforts last week, the league office announced today.

LSC Men's Track Athlete of the Week
Daniel Maina, Abilene Christian University
Sr., Distance, runner, Nanyuki, Kenya/Ngumo High School    
In his first steeplechase race of the season, Maina finished sixth in the 3000 Steeplechase at the Penn Relays in Philadelphia, Pa., posting an automatic qualifying time for next month's NCAA Division II outdoor championship meet in San Angelo. ... Maina -- the defending national champion in the steeplechase -- cruised to the finish in a time of 8:51.44, which is an automatic qualifying time for the national meet and the second-best time in Division II this season.  The top time now belongs to Reuben Mwei of Adams State, who ran 8:49.92 in the same race to finish third.

LSC Men's Field Athlete of the Week
Kyle Harris, Eastern New Mexico University
Sr., Triple Jump, Altamonte Springs, Fla./NMMI/Lyman HS    
Harris turned in 16th place finish in the men's triple jump at the Drake Relays on Saturday afternoon, with a distance of 45-8.50.

LSC Women's Track Athlete of the Week
Winrose Karunde, Abilene Christian University    
So., Distance, Nyeri, Kenya/South Tetu Girls High School    
Karunde finished 15th in the 10,000 meters at the Penn Relays. ... Karunde - the defending national champion in the event - finished the race in 36:32.09 to post a solid provisional qualifying time for next month's NCAA Division II outdoor championship meet.

Richard Kogo, Eastern New Mexico, set a team record in the 10,000-meter run at the Drake University Relays, running a personal-record 32:35.22, finishing 3.23 ahead of University of Tulsa's Brett Koehn.

At the Penn Relays last weekend, Amos Sang won the College Men's 10,000 meter Championship race with teammate Cleophas Tanui finishing second.  ... Sang and Tanui finished 1-2 in the 10,000 meters, and each posted automatic qualifying times.  Sang turned in a time of 29:34.21, while Tanui finished second in 29:42.52.  Those times make them NO. 4 and No. 5, respectively, in Division II this season. ... Winrose Karunde ran a solid race to finish 15th in the College Women's 10,000 meter Championship, posting a qualifying mark for the NCAA Division II outdoor championship meet in San Angelo. ... At the OU Sooner Invitational, Stephen Toler and Landon Ehlers tied for first in the pole vault, each clearing 16-6.75.

Richard Kogo led the ENMU men's track team at the Drake Relays, setting a team record in the 10,000-meter run. The Hounds also turned in strong performances in the 4x100 and 4x200 relays. This week, the Greyhounds and Zias will travel to Abilene Christian.
