Track & Field: Championships meet on tap
Student-athletes were named Lone Star Conference Track & Field Athletes of the Week for their efforts last week, the league office announced today.
2009 LSC Track & Field Championships
The Lone Star Conference Track & Field Championships are set
May 7-9 in Kingsville, Texas. Competition starts on Thursday
with the Decathlon and Heptathlon events. To follow the meet

LSC Track & Field Athletes of the Week
LSC Men's Track Athlete of the Week
Raymond Radway, Abilene Christian University
Sr., Quartermiler, McKinney, Texas/McKinney North High
School
Radway won the 400 meters last Thursday at ACU's Oliver
Jackson Open, coming up with an automatic qualifying time of 46.59
seconds. ... Radway is the defending national champion in the 400
meters, and his is one of the top times in the nation.
Cody Hughes, Texas A&M University-Commerce
Fr., Distance, Anna, Texas/Anna HS
Hughes finished second in the 3,000-meter run (8:49.60),
just two seconds behind individual champion - Louie Tijerina of
TCU. In addition, Both Tijerina (8:47.62) and Hughes eclipsed the
four-year old record of 8:54.75 at Fouts Field in Denton.
LSC Men's Field Athlete of the Week
Chad Schaertl, Angelo State University
Sr., Throws, Johnson City, Texas/ Johnson City

Senior Chad Schaertl won the hammer throw in Thursday's
Oliver Jackson Open with a throw of 184'1". His personal best in
the event improved upon his provisional mark into the NCAA Division
II National Championships later this month.
James Hardin, Abilene Christian University
Jr., Decathlete, Longview, Texas/ Hallsville
High School
James Hardin won the decathlon at the ACU Oliver Jackson
Open last week, posting a solid provisional qualifying mark of
6,724 points, which is the seventh-best mark in the nation. ...
Hardin set the school record in the decathlon javelin with a throw
of 195 feet, 1 inch.
LSC Women's Track Athlete of the Week
Chrystal Ruiz, Angelo State University
Jr., Hurdles/Multis, Lakehills, Tenn./Bandera H.S.
Junior Chrystal Ruiz won the 400-meter hurdles in
Thursday's Oliver Jackson Open and improved upon her provisional
mark in the event for the 2009 NCAA Division II National
Championships. Ruiz ran a personal-best 1:01.29. Ruiz also recorded
a personal-best in the long jump as well, placing second in the
event with a jump of 18'11.25.
Megan Bryant, Abilene Christian University
Fr., Distance, Carlsbad, N.M./Carlsbad High School
Megan Bryant notched a first-place performance in the
5000-meter run at the Abilene Christian University Oliver Jackson
Open, completing the race with a time of 22:26.98.
LSC Women's Field Athlete of the Week
Adree Lakey, Angelo State University
Sr., Throws, Sylvester, Texas/Roby H.S.
Senior Adree Lakey broke her own ASU and LSC record in
the shot put Thursday with a throw of 52'8.25" to win the Oliver
Jackson Open. Lakey also improved upon her automatic mark in the
discus throw, placing second with a personal-best throw of 165'6".
She also placed second in the hammer throws with a toss of
177'.
Cassidi Porter, Tarleton State University
Sr., Jumps, Saginaw, Texas/Boswell
Porter out-jumped all of her competition at the Oliver
Jackson Open in Abilene last Thursday, taking home first-place
honors in the women's high jump event with a clearing height of
5-05 feet. This was Porter's third win of the season.
LSC Track & Field Other Top Performers
James Howell, Angelo State, automatically qualified for the 2009
NCAA Division II National Championships in the 400-meter dash,
recording a time of 46.79 Thursday, placing second. Howell was also
part of the Rams' 4x400 squad that also recorded a time of 3:09.34
to automatically qualify the ASU squad.
Brian Smith, Eastern New Mexico, eclipsed the ENMU record in the
men's 100-yard dash, completing the sprint with a time of 10.66 to
finish in seventh place at the Abilene Christian Oliver Jackson
Open.
Daniel Draper, Eastern New Mexico, won the javelin toss at the
Abilene Christian University Oliver Jackson Open with a throw of
186' 1".
Jeff Rayome, Texas A&M University-Commerce, at the 2009 Mean
Green Twilight, hosted by North Texas, he won the shot put with a
throw of 51-5".
Cathryn Pratka, Texas A&M University-Kingsville, cleared 5-3
at the Rice Twilight. She took third place in the meet
trailing only two NCAA Division I athletes.
Tracey Young, Eastern New Mexico, finished third in the high jump,
clearing a height of 5' 1.75" at the ACU Oliver Jackson Open.
Sunny Henderson, Texas A&M University-Commerce, at the 2009
Mean Green Twilight, hosted by North Texas, junior Sunny Henderson
won the javelin with a throw of 116-10.

Abilene Christian

race at the Oliver Jackson Open, finally posting a provisional
qualifying mark of 40.36 seconds. ... Decathlete Camille
Vandendriessche - who has the nation's top mark in the decathlon -
automatically qualified for the national meet in the pole vault
with a mark of 16-6.75.
Angelo State
The Angelo State track and field teams recorded seven automatic
and 11 provisional marks for the 2009 NCAA Division II National
Championships Thursday at the Oliver Jackson Open hosted by Abilene
Christian...The Rams' 4x400-meter relay squad recorded an automatic
mark in the event after placing second with a time of 3:09.34...The
Rambelles' 4x400-relay squad recorded the top time in NCAA D-II
this season with a winning time of 3:44.44 in the event to claim
automatic qualification for the National Meet. The time was the
sixth best in Rambelle history...Senior Chase Moore gave the Rams a
second qualifier in the decathlon as he finished the Oliver Jackson
Open with 6,650 points...Junior Andria Nussey won the long jump in
Thursday's meet with a personal-best leap of 19'6.25", recording
automatic mark in the event...Senior Culley Jo Dawson recorded an
automatic mark in the hammer throw, winning the event with a toss
of 181" Thursday...Senior Ryan McWilliams recorded a provisional
mark in the 400-meter hurdles Thursday with a time of
52.53...Junior Kris Crocket collected another provisional
qualifying mark for the Rambelles with a time of 1:02.48 in the 400
hurdles...Three other Rams picked up provisional marks on Thursday.
Sophomore Ryan Adkins in the 100-meter dash (10.55), freshman Nick
Smith in the 200-meter dash (21.42) and junior Andrew Crookham in
the shot put (53'1.75")...Junior Celethia Byrd improved her
provisional mark in the 100 meters with a time of 11.70 Thursday,
placing third...The Rams' 4x100-meter relay squad improved upon its
provisional mark with a time of 40.93, placing second.
Eastern New Mexico
After a strong performance last week at the Abilene Christian
Oliver Jackson Open which saw Daniel Draper (javelin) and Megan
Bryant (5,000-meter) register first-place finishes, while Brian
Smith set a team record in the 100-meter sprint, the Greyhounds and
Zias will travel to Kingsville, Texas, for the Lone Star Conference
championships, beginning on May 7th.
Tarleton State
The Tarleton Track and Field Teams set three different provisional
times/marks at the 2009 Oliver Jackson Open in Abilene last
Thursday. Chelsey Bradford provisionaled with a time of 11.95
in the women's 100m dash. Tara Towns set a provisional mark
of 18-05.25 in the women's long jump. Jamal Mays set a
provisional time in the men's 100m dash with a time of 10.58.
Overall, Tarleton won three events and placed 22 athletes in the
top-five. Heading into the LSC Championships, Tarleton has
qualified 13 athletes (five women, eight men) for the NCAA Division
II National meet.
Texas A&M-Commerce
At the 2009 Mean Green Twilight, hosted by North Texas, last
Thursday, senior Jeff Rayome won the shot put (51-5) and junior
Sunny Henderson won the javelin (116-10). Freshman Cody Hughes was
second in the 3,000-meter run (8:49.60), just two seconds behind
individual champion - Louie Tijerina of TCU. Both Tijerina
(8:47.62) and Hughes eclipsed the four-year old record of 8:54.75
at Fouts Field in Denton. Also finishing second was the Lions'
4x400-meter relay team of Albert Sinegal, Cairo Thornton, Lyndon
Wyse and Brad Dotson, who crossed the line in a season-best time of
3:18.00. The Lions had four individuals finish third including
junior Taylor Smith in the shot put with a season-best throw
(40-10), senior Dean Laing in the shot put (38-5), sophomore
Brandon Womack in the 800-meter run with a time of 1:58.72 and
freshman Demetrius Holmes in the 110-meter hurdles (16.39). In
addition, the Lions' 4x100-meter relay team of Anthony Valle,
Lyndon Wyse, Brad Dotson and Cairo Thornton was third in a time of
42.61.
Texas A&M-Kingsville
Heading into the LSC Championships the Javelina men have three
athletes who appear most likely to medal. Dusty Block is
currently seeded second in the 800-meters and has clocked a 1:55.86
this season. Freshman high jumper Trent Hesseltine has the
top clearance in the league with a height of 6-8.75. Senior
Abel Garcia is seeded in the top four in the shot put, hammer and
discus. Garcia and Hesseltine have both provisionally
qualified for the NCAA D2 Championships. The 4x100 and 4x400
relay teams should also contend for a medals. On the women's
side of the ledger, junior Erica Alvarado is the team's best bet to
grab a medal in a middle distance event.
