LSC Track & Field Championships: ACU Dominates Distance Events
The Abilene Christian men's and women's track teams dominated
the Friday long distance events at the 75th Lone Star Conference
Track and Field Championships at Javelina Stadium.
The Wildcats men and women each won the 3000-meter steeplechase
and the 10000-meter run. In the steeplechase, Loice Cheboi
won the women's event by drafting behind Tarleton State's Krista
Morris for the first two-thirds of the race before kicking past
Morris to win in a time of 12:06.85. Texas A&M-Commerce's
Kate Donovan took bronze medal honors while ACU's Allison Fowler
and Angelo State's Jennifer Flanery took fourth and fifth place,
respectively.
In the men's steeplechase, Daniel Maina fought off a pair of
Tarleton State runners to take the gold medal in 9:26.90.
TSU's Jared McNeil and Westyn Rosilies each broke 9:45.
Commerce's Brandon Womack finished fourth, Thomas Harris of West
Texas A&M placed fifth and Eastern New Mexico's Tyson Jex took
sixth.
In the women's 10,000 meters, ACU's Winrose Karunde cruised to the
win in a time of 38:52.29. Angelo State's Paige Massingill
(Comanche, Texas) held on for as long as she could and finished in
second place, 16 second back. Cheboi picked up her second
medal of the night grabbing third place honors. Tarleton
State's Vanessa Elizondo and Morgan Kuykendall took fourth and
fifth place, respectively. ASU's Patricia Dailey nabbed the
final scoring position.
In the men's 10,000 meters, ACU's Cleophas Tanui outkicked
teammate Amos Sang to win the race in 32:23.42. TSU placed
the next three runners in Ryan Quezada, Kolin Styles and Gerzain
Valenzuela. ASU's Brian Carroll took home sixth place
honors.
The finals for the majority of the running events will be held on
Saturday starting at 5 o'clock with the 400-meter relay.
