LSC Track & Field Championships: Ruiz, Henson Crowned Multi-Event Champs
Angelo State's Chrystal Ruiz and Abilene Christian's Andy Henson won the Heptathlon and Decathlon, respectively, at the 75th running of the Lone Star Conference Track and Field Championships.
Ruiz did just enough to edge out teammates Kyndel Howell and
Andria Nussey. Ruiz finished with 4,249 points and set an LSC
Heptathlon record in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 14.33.
Howell posted a score of 4,155 points and Nussey, the day one
leader, took third with a total of 4,104 points. Nussey tied an LSC
Heptathlon record with a 25.79 in the 200-meter dash and broke the
long jump record with a distance of 5.73 meters.
Abilene Christian's Amber Brooks took fourth place with 3,850
points and ASU's Shelly Diggs took fifth place with 3,131 points to
round out the scoring.
In the decathlon, Henson won by a total of 43 points, or six
seconds in the 1500 meter run. Texas A&M-Kingsville's Ted Dugie
entered the second day of competition in fourth place, but came on
strong with solid performances across the board and trailed Henson
by 164 points entering the final event. Dugie set a personal record
with a time of 5:33.11 in the 1500 meter run, but came up just
short when Henson crossed the tape in a time of 6:00.38.
Henson finished with 6,056 points while Dugie followed closely
with 6,013 points. Texas A&M-Commerce's Dean Laing took bronze
medal honors with 5,629 points while setting the LSC Decathlon
record in the discus with a toss of 148-3. Harold Nair took fourth
place honors for A&M-Kingsville with 5,298 points, ACU's James
Hardin was fifth with 5,091 points and Eldon Grimslid took sixth
place with 5,047 points for West Texas A&M. Grimslid's sixth
place finish earned him one point, the first point that West Texas
A&M has ever scored in the LSC Championships.
