LSC Track & Field Championships: Angelo State Takes Women's Crown
Angelo State took home the Lone Star
Conference Women's Track and Field Championship hardware on
Saturday night at Javelina Stadium. The Rambelles had the top
six individual scorers in the meet to total a league-record 331
points.
The Belles outdistanced the field to win their third conference
title. Abilene Christian took second place with 175 points,
while Tarleton State (84), Texas A&M-Commerce (23), Texas
A&M-Kingsville (19) and Eastern New Mexico (13) took third
through sixth place, respectively.
ASU's Aisha Adams finished the meet as the top individual point
getter with 42 points. Culley Dawson (34), Adree Lakey (32),
Chrystal Ruiz (31) and Andria Nussey (30) each had at least 30
points individually for the Belles.
Adams opened the scoring on Saturday for the Belles with a first
place finish in the triple jump as she leaped 40-5.5. ACU's
Destinee Nixon finished in second place with a jump of 38-5.5 and
Cathryn Rittenberry picked up third place for ASU with a leap of
37-7.75.
In the second event of the day, Dawson set a new LSC Meet and
Javelina Stadium record with a toss of 175-00 in the discus.
She broke the stadium record by nearly 13 feet and eclipsed
her closest competitor by almost 19 feet. ACU's Paige Newby
grabbed second place with a throw of 156-2 and Lakey took home the
bronze medal with a toss of 152-2.
ACU won the first event on the track when they edged out the
Belles in the 4x100-meter relay. The Wildcats finished in
46.78 while ASU crossed the tape in 47.64. Tarleton State
grabbed third place in a time of 48.98.
The Belles continued to rack up the points in the 1500-meter run
as they took four of the six places. Brittney Heath won the
race in a time of 4:44.46 narrowly edging out teammate Paige
Massingill (4:47.13). Kymberlee Trnka took third place for
Tarleton State in a time of 4:49.85.
The TexAnns' Kandis Brooks won the 100-meter hurdles in an NCAA
Division II provisional qualifying time of 14.17. Ruiz and
Nussey took second and third for ASU crossing the tape in 14.32 and
14.54, respectively.
The Wildcats won the next two events as Kim Prather took the
gold in the 400-meter dash in a time of 55.71 and Wanda Hutson
smoked the track en route to a stadium record 11.63 in the
100-meter dash. ACU's Azraa Rounds took the silver in the 400
in a time of 56.88 and was followed by ASU's Daunyae Harris at
57.78. Celethia Byrd took second in the 100 for the Belles in
a time of 11.68 while TSU's Chelsey Bradford grabbed the bronze
medal in a time of 12.16.
Nussey and Heath took first and second in the 800 meters crossing
the line in 2:19.34 and 2:20.48, respectively. Trnka grabbed
her second third place finish of the day with a time of
2:21.85.
The 400-meter hurdles proved to be a top event for the Belles as
they swept the top three places. Adams won the event in a
stadium record time of 1:00.08 and was followed by Kris Crockett in
1:02.48 and Ruiz in 1:03.16.
After getting second in the 100 meters, Byrd won the 200-meter
dash by edging out Prather. Byrd broke a 17-year old stadium
record by clocking a 23.89 compared to Prather's 24.11.
Hutson finished just behind both as she crossed the tape in a
time of 24.15.
In the 5,000-meter run, ACU's Winrose Karunde broke away from the
pack after a mile and easily won in a time of 18:25.21.
Massingill took the silver in a time of 18:51.20 and ACU's
Loice Cheboi finished in third (19:11.94).
To cap off their LSC Championship, the Belles won the final event
of the night, the 4x400-meter relay. Sara Hooker, Byrd,
Harris and Crockett broke the stadium record with a time of
3:44.29. ACU finished in second place in 3:46.63 and Tarleton
State grabbed third in a time of 4:00.13.
