Gene Upshaw, from Robstown, played on the Javelina teams in 1963-66 and was All-Lone Star Conference. He was selected to participate in the Coaches All-America game, the Senior Bowl and the College All-Star game. He was inducted into the Javelina Hall of Fame in 1976.
He was a captain in the College All-Star contest.
Upshaw was a member of the track and field team and held the school shot put record until last spring. He also was a member of the “T” Association.
The Javelina standout was a first-round draft choice of the Oakland Raiders after finishing his football career and has been selected All-Pro on numerous occasions.
Upshaw was named to the all-time Texas All-Pro team last year. This list includes Texans who were selected by a state-wide vote as the best to ever play professional football.
Upshaw is currently in his 10th season with the Raiders.
