Phil George spent 36 years serving Angelo State athletics as the men's basketball coach and men's athletic director.

During George's tenure as men's basketball coach, his squads had a record of 512-274. He led his 1957 team to the National Junior College Athletic Association championship, the only national championship in the program's history to date. George was also named National Coach of the Year that season. During his tenure as coach, he guided seven players to all-American honors, while his teams won nine conference championships and five regional titles in addition to the 1957 national championship.

In 1968, George, as athletic director and coach, led ASU through the transition into Lone Star Conference and NCAA Division II

competition. In addition to coaching men's basketball, George had stints as baseball coach, assistant football coach, track and field coach, and golf coach for the Rams.

He became the school's first full-time men's athletic director in 1978. While George worked as athletic director, ASU prospered in

men's athletics, as the football team won the 1978 NAIA national championship and the track and field team finished runner-up at the NCAA national meet. Numerous athletes won individual national championships and earned all-American honors during George's tenure.

George also was instrumental in the fund-raising aspects of ASU athletics, and established the ASU Ram Club, which provides financial support for both general university and athletic concerns.
