James Helvey is one of the people responsible for the rise of the Cameron tennis program. He was hired in 1993 as the men’s tennis coach and in 1999, he took over the women’s program and coached both teams until 2017. Helvey amassed a record of 802-392 at CU and was named the LSC Coach of the Year four times, the ITA Regional Coach of the Year six times, and in 2008 he was named the ITA/NCAA National Coach of the Year.
Helvey’s teams won eight NCAA Regional Championships and four LSC Championships. He coached his teams to eight NCAA National Tournament Round of 16 bids and twice they advanced to the national quarterfinals. Helvey coached 10 ITA All-Americans and 23 ITA Academic All-Americans. He also served as the ITA National Chair from 2007-2017. Helvey was inducted into the Cameron Athletics Hall of Fame in 2021. He currently resides in Arlington, Texas where he is the Tennis Services Manager of the Arlington Tennis Center.
