The Lone Star Conference averaged 5,344 fans per game to finish
third among Division II leagues as attendance at NCAA football
games hit a record number during the 2006 season, according to
figures released by the NCAA.
The LSC, a 13-team league, had 379,400 fans at 71 games in 2006,
which was the second most in Division II just behind the Southern
Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (388,522).
The SIAC took its fourth straight conference crown with 7,770 per
outing for its 10 members, while the Mid-America Intercollegiate
Athletic Association was second with 5,389 per contest.
West Texas A&M led the LSC in home attendance, while finishing
third in average attendance (10,637) and first in total attendance
(74,461) among Division II members. The Buffs had crowds of 10,000
or better at four of six regular season home contests, with a
season-high 16,481 against Midwestern State and 13,641 against
Abilene Christian.
Joining WTAMU in the top ten was ACU in sixth place with 9,001 fans
per game, followed by Texas A&M-Kingsville (17th at 6,480),
Northeastern State (18th at 6,207), MSU (20th at 6,053), Tarleton
State (25th at 5,540), Angelo State (34th at 4,358), Eastern New
Mexico (42nd at 4,038), Southeastern Oklahoma State (58th at
3,512), East Central (63rd at 3,440), Central Oklahoma (69th at
3,294), Texas A&M-Commerce (85th at 2,797), and Southwestern
Oklahoma State (88th at 2,760).
Division II set a total-attendance record, topping three million
fans for the first time (3,005,214) and eclipsing the mark of
2,989,274 set in 2005. The 615 football teams in NCAA Division I,
II and III combined to reach a gate total of 47,909,313 fans,
eclipsing 2003’s record mark by 1,764,774 as well.
