LSC announces annual media awards

Amarillo sportswriter Jeremy Heath was recognized for the first time and Wichita Falls broadcaster Andy Austin was honored for the second time as the annual Lone Star Conference media awards were announced Monday by league officials.

Heath, an employee of the Amarillo Globe News for three years, took the Kirk Hill Award as the league's most outstanding sportswriter, while Austin, the voice of Midwestern State University Athletics on KWFB-FM in Wichita Falls, Texas, claimed the Jake Trussell Award as top broadcaster of the year.

The awards, which recognize those who best promote the LSC and its members through their work in the media, are selected annually by sports information directors at the LSC's 15 member institutions.

Heath, a West Texas A&M graduate, served his first year as the beat writer for the Buffalo football team in 2006.  Previously, he covered WTAMU volleyball along with men's and women's soccer.

Heath's coverage this past season included notes along with pre-game and post-game coverage of the team for all of the Buffalo's games.

Austin, a media personality in Wichita Falls for 22 years, has been the voice of MSU athletics since 1992.  He becomes one of only six broadcasters to win the Trussell Award multiple times, having claimed the honor in 2000 as well.

The play-by-play voice of the Mustangs, Austin announced football and men's basketball this season including postseason appearances by both squads.  He is currently the Sports Director at News Channel Six (KAUZ-TV) in Wichita Falls, after serving as assistant athletic director and sports information director at MSU from 2000-06.
