Lone Star Conference champion Abilene Christian had 16
first-team selections and five individual award winners honored
Friday when the annual football awards for the league's South
Division were announced by LSC officials.
The Wildcats, who claimed its
first outright LSC crown since 1973 with a perfect 10-0 season, had
11 players on the first-team offense and five more on the top
defense, plus two-time Offensive Back of the Year Bernard Scott,
Offensive Lineman of the Year Tony Washington, Co-Defensive Lineman
of the Year and Freshman of the Year Aston Whiteside and Coach of
the Year Chris Thomsen. ACU is the No. 1 seed in Super Region
Four and has a first-round bye before hosting a second-round game
on Saturday, November 22.
West Texas A&M had 17 players
honored on the first- and second-teams with nine on offense and
eight on defense. The Buffaloes (10-1) are the fourth seed
and will host No. 5 seed Central Washington (10-1) this Saturday,
Nov. 15, at 1 p.m. in the NCAA Division II playoffs. The
winner of the game advances to the second round to play against top
seed ACU in Abilene, Texas.
WTAMU had three earn special
awards with Co-Defensive Lineman of the Year Eugene Sims, two-time
Linebacker of the Year Jared Brock and Receiver of the Year Charly
Martin.
Texas A&M-Kingsville had nine
first- and second-teamers including Defensive Back of the Year
Jabir Perkins and Co-Defensive Lineman of the Year Jimmy
Saddler-McQueen, while Tarleton State put eight total players on
the top two teams.
Midwestern State had two
first-team and one second-team pick, while Angelo State had one on
each team and Eastern New Mexico had one second-teamer.
Overall, 102 student-athletes
were recognized by the LSC's postseason awards program, with 34
players named to the first team, 30 on the second team and another
38 gaining honorable mention. The all-conference honors were
selected by the head coaches of the seven South Division teams.
