West Texas A&M’s Ben Everson and Sebastian Furness along with Midwestern State’s Raul Herrera were selected as the Lone Star Conference Preseason Players of the Year for 2010 league officials announced Tuesday.
Everson was recognized as LSC Offensive Preseason Player of the Year, while Furness and Herrera shared the league’s Defensive Preseason Player of the Year. The honors were voted upon by the league’s head coaches and sports information directors and various media representatives.
Everson, a 5-10 senior forward from Middlesbrough, England, received nine of 10 votes cast for offensive honors to finish in front of Incarnate Word’s Jesus Cortez.
Everson paced the Buffaloes in most offensive categories, including goals (15), total points (31), and game-winners (4). He was named to the National Soccer Conference Association of America South Central Region team and Daktronics All-American second team and also earned LSC and South Central Region Offensive Player of the Year honors.
Furness and Herrera each claimed three of the 11 votes to finish in front of Northeastern State’s Michael Wilson (two), WTAMU’s Nicki Nielsen (two) and Everson received one vote as well.
Furness, a 6-0 junior goalkeeper from Middlesbrough, England, was a second-team all-LSC selection after recording a 10-1-2 record in goal while allowing seven goals in 153 shots faced. He posted seven shutouts with 56 saves.
Herrera, a 6-2 senior goalkeeper from Dallas, Texas, led NCAA Division II with a .304 goals against average and was fifth in the country with an 86.5 save percentage which helped the Mustangs advance to the postseason for the fourth-straight season. The reigning LSC Defensive Player of the Year, posted a 12-1-3 mark in 15 starts between the posts while allowing five goals in 103 total shots faced. Herrera was selected to the NSCAA All-South Central Region, Daktronics first-team All-American and first-team all-LSC squads.
ENMU, UIW, MSU, NSU and WTAMU will compete in the LSC this season. The slate of games begins in early September. Each of the five LSC teams will play the other twice during the regular season, with those contests determining the conference champion. The LSC has set-up a scheduling alliance with the Heartland Conference for teams in both leagues to play each other once for an additional five games as well.
